Mr. Potato Head Is Being Replaced By An Avocado? WTF?

If you thought the millennial generation couldn’t get, well, more millennial generation about things… think again! The beloved Mr. Potato Head is apparently getting a 2019 holy-guacamole upgrade.

Or is he?

Hasbro announced on April 1st that your favorite childhood toy will be embodied by the trendiest food ever.  The brand introduced via Instagram the environmentally-conscious Mr. Avo Head — who totally has an Instagram channel, probably listens to indie rock, and definitely goes to community yoga classes.

Oh, and he was actually designed with a beard, headphones, cool-guy sneaks, and some big ol’ spectacles. Did we mention the man-bun? Yeah, there’s a man bun.

We wonder what folks in 1952, which is when our personified potato was born, would think of this green ball of healthy fats and not-too-many carbs.

Would they call blasphemy, or is this pranky update just the thing we need?

Potatoes may be at the heart of several cultures’ diets (and they’re way, way cheaper than avocados), but starchy, carb-y foods just aren’t getting the same kind of love as clean, green foods do. Onward and upward, right?

But guess what — this looks like it’s just a April Fools’ Day hoax. Can we get a collective, “whew”?

Some people thought the branded hoax went too far by making fun of the millennial generation and leaning into lazy avocado jokes:

Before anyone realized it was a joke, Popsugar wrote, ” Although tried and true fans probably remember when Mr. Potato Head temporarily changed into Mr. Pita Head (jog your memory with the clip below) in Toy Story 3, we love him just the way he is.”

Some people had a few words to say about Hasbro’s flavor of prank, though. And we can’t say we disagree entirely.

The game apparently includes avocado toast. Hasbro is clearly going full-throttle in their millennial stereotypes:

It’s true. Is anything sacred?

But people sure do love their avocados:

And some people actually did love the prank:

And the word “guaccident.” Which is just, well, genius.

We miss the good ol’ days of Potato Head. Remember giving him eyes for a mouth?

Nostalgia!

There was something so fun about taking him apart and putting him back together! Our potato friend never failed to help a generation of kids pass the time.

That iconic nose is what some of us miss the most! It was so fun!

Ah, we miss the ’80s and ’90s, when toys were silly, weird, and free from stereotypes. Even though we love a good avocado, we’re glad this was just a prank. Eating the yummy fruit is enough for us!
