Starbucks Announced A New Kombucha Drink That Literally Nobody Asked For

Oh, Starbucks. How you always manage to surprise us. The coffee chain has been doing big things this summer, from trying to go strawless to slowly introducing plant-based ice cream to a few of their locations. But this? Well, it’s an interesting step.

It was just announced that Starbucks is going to get into the kombucha business. If you’re unfamiliar with kombucha, here’s what you need to know. Kombucha is a fermented tea made with bacteria and yeast. And while it sounds a little gross, it’s got a huge fan base. In fact, a lot of people credit kombucha for its health benefits. Mayo Clinic feels as if not enough research has been done just yet to support these health benefit claims, but that’s not stopping people from giving it a try.

Starbucks isn’t just selling kombucha. They’re actually making their own, under the Evolution Fresh label. According to their new release, the company will be launching six different flavors — Ginger Lemon Honeycrisp, Mango Pineapple, Ginger Greens, Spicy Greens, Pink Grapefruit, and Turmeric Pineapple Coconut.

They’re really branching out with this new beverage — yet, it’s probably not a beverage most of their fans were highly anticipating. Because, well, kombucha doesn’t contain the fun stuff, like whipped cream, caramel drizzles, or coffee.

Instead, kombucha — primarily, kombucha brewed at home that’s free from sugar and additives — is synonymous with a health-conscious lifestyle. So, it has the potential of bringing in the health-conscious individuals among us who might not have developed a Starbucks addiction just yet.

Of course, it doesn’t mean that regular Starbucks patrons won’t be interested in trying each and every flavor. If it’s made by Starbucks, it’s worth giving a shot — at least once. Major cities like Boston, Chicago, and Los Angeles should be getting the drinks in shortly.  The company expects to roll out the product to additional cities throughout the fall into next spring.
