Gordon Ramsay Went Way Too Far With Sofia Vergara — And The Internet Is Pissed At Him

Chef Gordon Ramsay is known for his foul mouth. Every other word he speaks on his show Hell’s Kitchen is a bleeped-out swear. However, Ramsay’s mouth recently got him in trouble in a different, much more cringey way. A 2010 clip from The Tonight Show with Jay Leno has reemerged in which Ramsay treats actress Sofia Vergara totally inappropriately, and now the internet is coming for him almost ten years later.

Sofia Vergara of Modern Family fame sat down between host Jay Leno and Ramsay to talk about her 2010 Emmy nomination, share some vacation photos, and shoot the breeze. But it was hard for Vergara to do so, having to constantly evade Ramsay’s constant impolite jokes.

Ramsay first made a repulsive comment about Vergara screaming “in the bedroom.” He then questioned her about having a “whole wedge [of pizza] in [her] mouth at one time.” Vergara said she refuses to eat pizza with a knife and fork, so Ramsay then says, “You just pick it up and stick it in?”

The sexual innuendos are beyond gross. And what’s worse is that Leno brushes Ramsay’s dirty comments off with, “He’s English.”

Furthermore, the audience seemingly loved the awkward back-and-forth between Ramsay and Vergara, cooing and wooing at every exchange. At least Vergara served attitude back to Ramsay after he poo-pooed her dulce de leche.

We shivered at Ramsay smacking Vergara’s thigh. “No touching!” Vergara hit back. Sure, they hugged at the end of the interview. But that doesn’t mean Vergara wasn’t feeling uncomfy. Heck, we certainly were.

Needless to say, people are pissed about the on-air exchange that had successfully flown under the radar for nine years. Twitter user @claireOT had a great thread about why this back-and-forth is so wrong.

He is testing to see where he can push her to. She is at work, and her work involves being friendly with other celebrities, on chat shows. He knows she is unlikely to resist. He starts with a comment about sex, and doesn’t encounter resistance

When she states in Spanish ”this guy is disrespecting me”, she is looking for permission, from her management, or the director of the show, because she knows that she is under contract to them. That is the structural issue, and it’s a missed opportunity, here

He tests her physical boundaries. He pokes a finger close to her. Then he makes physical contact in a non-sexual zone. Then he uses a slap on the upper thigh (a very intimate area: and more intimate and it would be sexual assault). This is deliberate and calculated

Claire stated that she will use this clip to show her daughter how a predator can get “close enough to assault someone, in the workplace, and ensure they get away with it.”

And others have jumped on the anti-Ramsay bandwagon.
