Back when I was a kid, one of my comfort breakfasts was sour cream and bread. Pretty much, you took two pieces of toast, ripped them up in tiny pieces, and mixed it up with some sour cream, a dash of salt, and a dash of pepper. In my head, I thought this was a normal combination — in fact, my mom told me my grandfather ate it all the time. But all it took was one elementary school friend saying “that’s disgusting” for me to stay silent about my guilty pleasure. Thus, I can’t really judge Cynthia Nixon’s unusual bagel order that made the news. Yes, it’s unusual — but the girl knows what she wants.
If you missed the story: Nixon, who’s running for governor of New York, was caught ordering a cinnamon raisin bagel with lox, red onions, capers, tomatoes, and cream cheese. The last few ingredients might be fine, but what threw everyone off was the cinnamon raisin. Have you ever eaten onion and cinnamon before? How about onion and raisins? Or lox and cinnamon? Even though Nixon noted she liked the “sweet and salty” combo, it just doesn’t seem to jive.
Yes, I like to eat a Cinnamon Raisin Bagel with... lox, capers, red onions, cream cheese, and tomatoes.

No matter what, she used it as a way to help promote her campaign. Her campaign strategists even tweeted that it was kind of perfect that Nixon chose a bagel selection that likely doesn’t get a lot of love, as it showcases who she’d be as governor.
As we've said from the beginning of this campaign, @CynthiaNixon is running to represent those forgotten New Yorkers who need someone to stand up for their views, even if those opinions are out of the mainstream or even unpopular.https://t.co/AYA0RXqVNV

Plus, can we claim outrage over a bagel that we haven’t actually tried yet? Who are we to tell Nixon she’s wrong? Again, I’m positive I’d win over a few nonbelievers with sour cream and bread, especially if my salt and pepper ratios were just right.
If anything, Nixon’s bagel order should remind us that as fans of food, we shouldn’t be afraid to explore even the most questionable options if they’re safe and have a trusted fan behind them. Would you give Nixon’s bagel order a shot?
