Twinkies Just Released A Limited-Edition Flavor, And It’s Pretty Questionable

With the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing on July 16th, and the “Storm Area 51” Facebook event, this has been the summer of space. Now Twinkies is joining the likes of Oreo, Dairy Queen and Krispy Kreme with its own flavor honoring the Final Frontier. Despite as-yet unfounded rumors that the Moon is made of cheese, Twinkies went in a different direction with the new limited edition cake. Their Moonberry Twinkies will be sold only in Walmart, at $2.97 for a pack of 10. And they’re very recognizable.

Firstly the packaging been updated, with the mascot Twinkie the Kid given a space helmet under his cowboy hat: Twinkies can’t breathe in space either, you guys. And even more noticeable is the photo of the Twinkie itself, which shows that it’s a very distinct shade of dark blue, with a white cream filling. People reported that a Hostess representative explained that they are designed to mimic the night sky. Are you ready for this?

Of course, Star Wars fans already knew that food from space is blue:

And blue food is becoming more trendy back on Earth.

Although not every version:

Some people have an innate mistrust of blue food.

And even the people who eat it.

By the way, if you’re wondering what a Moonberry tastes like, you’re not the only one.

Twitter has questions.

There are several answers. Firstly, the Moonberries are a band:

In an animated series called The Dragon Prince, one of the characters’ favorite foods is moonberry surprise.

Moonberries also appear in a game called Skies of Arcadia:

Apparently they are rare and give characters a new Super Move. This probably isn’t true of the Moonberry Twinkies, sadly, but we do know that the cream in the middle is flavored like berries.

Twinkies like trying out flavors tied to national events. For example, they have a Fourth of July-themed flavor, which has been met with mixed results. From the definitely pro:

To the, “meh:”

To the somehow underwhelmed:

What were you expecting, exactly? In case you just want an objective review of the taste, here it is:

And this summer we met a new flavor that combines the Twinkies texture with a classic ice cream flavor:

One user found that it was better than the original — taste-wise, at least.

As with the nature of space itself, we have more questions than answers. But the mystery of the Moonberry Twinkie seems to be working in its favor.

Are they out of this world or out of their minds? If you want to try Moonberry Twinkies for yourself, make sure you pick them up before they vanish back into space… or wherever they came from.
