Sometimes things can get a little slow at work. Even though you’ve probably thought of a few clever ways to pass the time, those ideas were probably more in line with in-office games and pranks. You probably didn’t think, “Hey, let’s grill up a feral animal to see what happens.” At least, I hope you didn’t. However… Two teens who worked at fast food chain Teddy’s Bigger Burgers in Mapunapuna, Hawaii thought it’d be a good idea to grill up a rat, and let’s just say it was a bad idea for a handful of reasons.
Not only did it cost both employees their jobs after Snapchatting the footage, but the entire location was rightfully shut down. As you’d expect, grilling rats is a pretty huge health hazard. When news of the experiment got out, the restaurant vowed to be completely sanitized. Utensils used during the grilling were also replaced.
“We are horrified that a former teenage employee would conduct themselves in that way and make such a video of which we are investigating its authenticity,” said Richard Stula, the president of Teddy’s Bigger Burgers, according to WBRZ.
Stula seemed concerned that the former employees were “trying to destroy our reputation without regard for our 20-plus years of quality and aloha.” It seems to me that they were just two teens who weren’t thinking. In their minds, they were probably in it for the chance to go viral.
No matter what, animal cruelty is never funny, nor is using a popular chain’s equipment to potentially get patrons sick. Hopefully, these two learn a little bit about food safety before applying to another fast food restaurant.
