A Grocery Store Just Censored This Cake’s Graduation Message For The Most Cringeworthy Reason

censored graduation cake

If you graduate summa cum laude, it means you graduate with the highest of honors. It’s something most academic students strive for. But someone didn’t give the memo to grocery store chain Publix — since they censored the cake, editing out “cum” and replacing it with dashes. Obviously, the online ordering system had no clue it also means “with” in Latin. They thought “cum,” meant, well, you know. The porn-y word for ejaculation.

Cara Koscinski ordered the cake for her son Jacob, who graduated from a home-school program in Charleston, South Carolina with a 4.79 GPA. That’s an amazing achievement that, without a doubt, deserves a little bit of cake. When Koscinski first laid eyes on the dessert at home, she realized the “cum” in “summa cum laude” was removed.

“They put three dashes instead of the word!” Koscinski wrote on Facebook, with a photo of the accidentally shamed cake. “Shame on you Publix for turning an innocent Latin phrase into a total embarrassment for having to explain to my son and others (including my 70-year-old mother) about this joke of a cake. My son was humiliated!”

In an interview with The Washington Post, Koscinski noted that “I can’t believe I’m the first one to ever write ‘Summa Cum Laude’ on a cake.” At least the first person that a certain baker at Publix has come across. And she has a point — especially since there are a lot of Publix locations and exceptionally smart kids out there.

Koscinski’s husband picked up the dessert but forgot to take a look at it before presenting it to the crowd. He was the one who had to explain to his friends why the omission was so awkward.

Here’s the good news — Koscinski said in her interview that her son wasn’t a big cake eater, and even having one at the party was somewhat of a surprise. All in all, she’s just happy he graduated and looks forward to his bright future. At least it makes for a pretty funny story.

Maybe at the next big celebration party, they’ll celebrate with cupcakes and brownies instead.
