These Food Shops Are Offering 1950s Prices, But Today Only

One of the reasons why millennials are struggling? Things are just a lot more expensive than they were back in the ’50s and ’60s. Prices often rise, but salaries haven’t, which means that this particular age range has been blamed for “killing” everything from home sales to mayonnaise. But if you live in California, you may very well be in luck — and you have Amazon to thank.

Based on the success of the Amazon Prime series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, plenty of shops are participating in “Maisel Day,” in which prices will reflect the 1950s — which is the era in which the hit show takes place.

Unfamiliar with the concept? Well, if you like Gilmore Girls, you’ll probably like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Not only do both focus around a quirky female lead, but they’ve both been created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, who is an out-of-the-box character herself. Mrs. Maisel is a wife-turned-stand up comic, who accidentally (and secretively) changed her life around after getting some baffling news.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is nominated for a whopping 20 Emmy awards this year, and according to the Los Angeles Times, today has been dedicated to making people more aware of the show and possibly turning those nominations into wins.

Speaking of wins, you’ll win big if you know where to shop today. The Maisel Day website claims that “All Roads Lead To Maisel Day” and have mapped out participating locations.

Ready? You might want to jot some notes down.

A lot of delis are participating, including Art’s Delicatessen & Restaurant on Ventura Boulevard, which is offering a corned beef, pastrami or turkey sandwich for just 99 cents. Canter’s Deli is also offering a 99 cent pastrami sandwich.

More or less, if you like pastrami? Good news. Today is your day to shine.

Deluca’s Italian Deli on Americana Way is offering a $2 turkey sandwich. Hank’s will be giving out an 85 cent Reuben sandwich.

Plenty of bakeries are also offering prices from the 1950s. At Big Sugar Bakeshop, you can get a vanilla cupcake for just 25 cents. SusieCakes is also offering 25 cent cupcakes in a slightly larger variety of flavors.

Ladurée is offering 25 cent macarons at their two California locations. If ice cream is your thing, you can go to Yum Creamery for a $1.00 ice cream dessert.

For just a single scoop of ice cream, you can stop at McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams. For just 25 cents, you’ll feel like you’re in 1959 along with Midge Maisel herself.

Looking for a full meal? Well, Mel’s Drive-In on Sunset is probably your best bet.

They’re offering a burger and fries combo for just 50 cents. You can complete your meal with a 30 cent milkshake, or 30 cent slice of pie.

If you’re familiar with Los Angeles, you’ve probably eaten at Pink’s Hot Dogs before. Today only, you can grab a dog for 59 cents.

Food aside, you can also get other deals today — including cheap haircuts and movie tickets. It’s a good day to be out in Los Angeles.

The real question is, can every day be Maisel Day? And, can the East Coast celebrate too?

As far as promotions go, this one is huge. You’ll never be able to find gas for just dimes per gallon anywhere else in America.

For the record, most of these deals are limited to one per person and will only be valid today, August 15th. You can see the full list of participating restaurants and businesses, along with all the promotion details, on the Maisel Day website.

If you’re inspired to get into the show, you can watch seasons one and two on Amazon Prime. According to Town and Country Magazine, Season 3’s release date has yet to be announced — but, it’s been filmed. So, that news should come out any day.
