You probably knew about gingerbread men from a very early age. After all, there’s a childhood folk tale all about one in particular. Remember? “Run, run, as fast as you can! You can’t catch me, I’m the gingerbread man.” It was catchy, so perhaps that’s the reason why people assumed that gingerbread cookies could only be male. But one big chain is changing that, simply by replacing “man” with “biscuit.”
Pret A Manger, known best for its sandwiches and convenient lunch options, has been selling a gingerbread man they’ve called Godfrey. Godfrey has even popped up on a few social media posts throughout the years. It’s almost like Godfrey is a special mascot to the brand — he’s almost too sweet to eat. But based on a fan letter the chain received, they chose to give Godfrey a special lady friend named Annie.
Annie is set to debut in the U.K. But with her arrival brings a big change. Instead of using the pronouns of “man” and “woman,” Pret A Manger chose to drop them entirely. Godfrey and Annie will be known as gingerbread biscuits from here on out.
Godfrey and Annie are a gingerbread match made in heaven. Hopefully fans will see more of their adventures together around the winter holiday season.
