College dining hall food is rarely anything to write home about. However, one college served food so gross, students and their parents are demanding an explanation and immediate change. Hundreds of students at Ithaca College have signed a petition calling for reform in the college’s on-campus dining facility, Terraces Dining Hall.
“Over the past few years, there have been numerous complaints by our students attending Ithaca College regarding the quality and safety of the food served at on-campus dining halls,” the student body’s GoPetition page reads. “Issues ranging from moldy bread to spoiled milk to contaminated meat continue to be raised. We hear these complaints from our children via text and texted photos.”
The petition, which has garnered 529 signatures since its November 14th posting, requests “an immediate and comprehensive review of the food services provided on campus including, but not limited to: quality, sanitation practices, code violations, food preparation and nutrition.”
Students and parents want Ithaca to look to other colleges in the northeast as inspiration for upgrading their food services. Some have suggested Ithaca team up with Cornell University and its student food studies program.

“As soon as we became aware of this incident, the college’s dining services provider, Sodexo, responded quickly to examine its entire stock of bread products and found no other issues,” Maley wrote in an email statement to Ithaca.com. “Managers reviewed proper quality control training and procedures with all dining hall staff, including student workers.”
Can we fire Sodexo & hire whoever provides UNCG’s food? https://t.co/2zTM0FluhJ

Georgia Tech signed a contract to replace our current dining vendor, Sodexo, with their competitor, Aramark. They both are rife with abuse and ethical concerns, not to mention the low-quality food and terrible employment conditions. UMich has had some experience with Aramark. pic.twitter.com/ZgJ8pjW4LN

Maley noted to Ithaca.com that there has been an ongoing review of the college’s dining program under the new Vice President for Finance and Administration, Bill Guerrero. Students are encouraged to let those in charge know of any issues within the program.
Now that the petition is almost 530 people strong, it will be interesting to see how Ithaca and Sodexo take it from here.
