On June 17th, Curtis Mays had a Father’s Day lunch he’ll never forget. But not for a good reason. After finishing his burger, he noticed something very, very alarming on the receipt — along with his special requests, his waitress noted that the chef should spit in his meal prior to sending it out.
Mays was dining at Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden in Astoria, Queens when he saw the note. He initially ordered a cheeseburger with cheddar, well done, with toasted bread, onions, and mayo. On the receipt, “please spit in it too” was typed in. Now, it could have been a typo — perhaps the waitress meant to write “please split it in two,” which is a reasonable burger request. But, after the waitress was questioned — she was fired after Mays asked to speak to a manager — it seems as if she dodged the question instead of being incredibly apologetic over a misunderstanding.
“I asked her [the server] ‘Why would you do this?’ And she couldn’t explain it. She said she didn’t do it, so I was like ‘Who prints out the receipt?’ So she said, ‘I take it up there and print it myself.’ ‘So you did it? Why are you lying about it?’ She just walked off,” Mays said to ABC11.
EXCLUSIVE: On a scorching hot summer night, what’s better than a cold brew? Pair it with a juicy burger.

Cheddar cheese, well done, toast bread, please spit in it too! Don’t forget the mayo! Wait... spit?! At 11pm we’ll tell you which beer garden and what the manager told us. pic.twitter.com/45FWLNsTvS
Mays said he was disgusted once he saw it, especially since he already ate the burger in question. Luckily, the manager told ABC that he was confident his kitchen staff would never follow an unprofessional and disgusting request like that, meaning that Mays was likely in the clear.
He also received a refund for the burger. Even if the waitress was stressed out (and holidays like Father’s Day can be rather stressful), it’s no excuse to make such a cringe-worthy request like that. Hopefully, Mays will have a much better Father’s Day in 2019. It wouldn’t be shocking if he chose just to grill outside that day.
