The Shelf Life Of Costco’s 27-Pound Bucket Of Mac ‘n Cheese Will Make Your Brain Explode

If you’re prepping for the apocalypse — or any other natural disaster for that matter — Costco wants to bring you a little bit of comfort during potential chaos. The bulk chain store sells a 27-pound bucket of macaroni and cheese that provides 180 individual servings of the liquid gold-and-pasta combo. And although we could probably power through all 180 helpings within a matter of months (we have a minor mac ‘n cheese addiction), there’s really no rush. The shelf life on this product is…shocking, to say the least.

Because the mac ‘n cheese bucket is listed under Emergency Kits & Supplies on the Costco website, one should assume that this thing could get you through the darkest of times. So, the angels at Chef’s Banquet made sure that their mac could stay good for a whopping 20 years.

That’s right — this mac ‘n cheese will remain edible for ~two decades~.

“With the convenience of Chef’s Banquet Macaroni and Cheese, you can quickly prepare a hearty meal during a busy week or a moment of distress,” the mac ‘n cheese nutrition factsreads. “Simply open the re-sealable Metalite pouches, add hot water, and within minutes you can provide a meal the whole family will enjoy. If stored in a cool, dry location this product should retain its shelf life for up to 20 years.”

You’re probably thinking, “Hey, I love mac ‘n cheese. But I don’t love it enough to buy 27 pounds of it to store in my garage in case of emergency.” Well, friend, you’re in the minority.

Costco’s tub of mac, which retails for $89.99, is currently sold out. What do these people know that we don’t?

Obviously, this is causing quite a commotion on Twitter. Why does it exist? Why is it sold out? Should we be listening to our police scanners and watching for doom and gloom on the horizon?

Do we even want to know?

However, others are less concerned. In fact, perhaps every family, person, and college student should own such a creation.

Hmm…

No. Stop. This is terrible, terrible idea.

Honestly, same.

With a 20-year shelf life, there’s no way you’d be sticking to your all-natural and organic diet after the end has come. But for the rest of us, Costco, you’ve done us a solid.
