A huge change is coming to Starbucks, but honestly, you might not even miss it after a week or two. The company announced they’ll be getting rid of straws entirely, but have no fear — you’ll still be able to enjoy your cold beverage.
It might be hard to picture Starbucks without straws, but with a little bit of innovation, it can be done. You might remember not too long ago that they introduced what looks like an adult sippy cup — a lid with a raised section that’ll allow you to sip on your drink. The lid has technically been around since 2016, but hasn’t hit all locations just yet. Now, they’ve realized that the design — which is currently available at 8,000 shops — can help save the environment. Just think about how many straws get used and tossed at your local Starbucks per day, and then think about how many locations the company currently has.
“But how will I drink my Frappuccino?” you might ask. It’s a valid question — there’s a lot to a Frapp (read: whipped cream) that’s best enjoyed with a straw. Well, have no fear — the company has already thought that one through.
For Frappuccinos, and for the customers who might need a straw based on either health or personal preferences, they’ll be handing out paper straws that are much better for the environment, according to Delish. Phew.
If you’re notoriously straw-happy, maybe Starbucks can make you change your mind. According to The Last Plastic Straw, single-use straws significantly contribute to beach pollution. Reportedly up to 90% of pollution in the ocean is plastic. So by saying no to plastic straws, you’ll be taking a positive step forward.
With this movement, Starbucks is proving that they don’t just care about providing you with the tastiest seasonal beverages — they also want to make their community a cleaner and safer place.
Did you know that Starbucks has a rewards program? By joining Starbucks Rewards, you can get free food and drinks (and even free refills!). You can also order and pay for your favorites on your phone. Cheers!
