Girl Scout Cookies are the great equalizer. Everybody loves them. When Girl Scouts come knocking or you see them selling cookies at the grocery store, what do you do? You buy them, of course. But you don’t just buy one box; you stock up and store them in your freezer. Why? Because Girl Scout Cookie season only comes around once a year (which has come and gone, sadly), and you need your reserve of Thin Mints to last you the next 12 months. But what if we told you that now, you can buy Girl Scout Cookies at the grocery store? And for (less than!) half the price, at that? It’s true: Trader Joe’s now sells a version of Thin Mints that you need in your pantry ASAP.
Introducing Trader Joe’s Mini Dark Chocolate Mint Coins. If you’re a TJ’s regular, you might be thinking, Doesn’t Trader Joe’s already sell a version of Thin Mints? And you’re right — sort of. Every year during the holidays, they stock their shelves with Mini Dark Chocolate Mint Stars. But after the holidays are over, the Mint Stars disappear. (Or whenever they run out — whichever happens first.)
Given the extreme popularity of the Mint Stars and America’s obsession with Thin Mints, Trader Joe’s decided to create a version of the popular cookie that will be available the rest of the year. And honestly? We sort of can’t believe it’s taken this long.
A box of Trader Joe’s Mini Dark Chocolate Mint Coins is less than half the price of a box of Thin Mints. One box of the Mint Coins rings up at $1.99, while in 2018, Girl Scout Cookies cost about $5 a box. Of course, when you buy Girl Scout Cookies, that money does go to a great cause. But in the offseason, in case your freezer supply of Thin Mints runs low, now you can restock with Mint Coins.
It was only a matter of time until they were a (semi) permanent fixture on shelves.
If you’re a Mint Star lover, have no fear: They’ll be back again this year for the holidays. So until then, enjoy the Mint Coins from January through September at your local Trader Joe’s.
Whether you have a sleeve of Thin Mints or Trader Joe’s Mint Coins, you can use the cookies as an amazing pie crust. Take a sleeve and smash it down so that you have very fine cookie crumbs. Transfer to a bowl, add a quarter of a stick of melted butter, and then use that concoction to pat down into a pie crust. Boom! Chocolate mint pie crust. Yummy.
