A Weird Wedding Cake Trend Is Happening, And We Like It

In 2019, the weirder the better — when it comes to wedding cakes, that is. These days, couples are ditching tradition when designing their wedding cakes. And as cake decorators report, it’s go weird or go home. TBH, we love the sound of that.

According to Ron Ben-Israel, who spoke with Delish, darker wedding cakes are currently bleeding into the mainstream. The colors black, navy, gray, and chocolate brown are standing in for the standard white-frosted tiered cakes. These cakes aren’t cheap, but they make a grand statement.

“It’s the perfect way to hold on to the tradition of a show-stopping, gorgeous wedding cake while making it feel new, exciting, and equally as photo-worthy,” Ben-Israel said.  “When we ice a cake to look like cement or snakeskin, or if we make it black rather than white, it’ll still be recognizable as a wedding cake.”

However, if dark is, well, too dark, other cake decorators have seen an uptick in unusual colors for wedding cakes — including edible gold. Cake artist Betty Wu told Delish that her clients have been asking for colorful ombré wedding cakes and “colors speckled onto a classic white cake,” which is an interesting mashup between modern and traditional. Our very own So Yummy Creative Director, Tess Panzer, made her own cake for her wedding. She also went for an ombré-like design with ornamental edible gold flakes.

As Ben-Israel said, black and dark-colored cakes can still be easily recognizable as wedding cakes if decorated the right way. This gorgeous matte-black cake with pink and purple flowers proves exactly that.

Or, make your wedding cake “something blue.” This ombre cake is super fresh, yet still perfectly traditional.

Gaudy, unique, and really sweet. We love that metallic splatter.

Some couples don’t want their wedding cake to be made of cake at all. In fact, many people are asking for cakes that are actually other foods in disguise.

These waffle wedding cakes look heavenly. We’re sure they taste heavenly, too.

And, yes. Pancake wedding cakes are definitely a thing, as well.

Of course, we’ve all seen the donut wedding cake. Genius.

Some couples scrap dessert all together and swap out sweets for cheese. We want an invite to that party.

And with more recent attention being paid to going green with wedding celebrations, many couples are opting to serve their guests treats made with locally-sourced and sustainable ingredients.

This desire to be environmentally conscious on their big day oftentimes leads couples to choose bite-sized bits over large cakes that call for napkins, plates, utensils, and the whole nine yards.

Again — this means those donut towers are more popular than ever. That’s fine with us.

Layers upon layers of macarons? Yes please.

So, if you’re in the midst of planning your own wedding, you may want to think outside the box when it comes to your cake. The more the design shows off your personality, the better.

Go bold, bright, and beyond everyone’s imagination. This ain’t your grandma’s wedding, after all.

And don’t be afraid of color. White had its fun.

Remember: In 2019, weird wedding cakes are wonderful wedding cakes.
