Sure, you’re used to deconstructing an Oreo — but have you ever thought about how they’re actually made? The popular cookie goes through a pretty interesting process that’ll make you appreciate every Oreo that’s in the box. Or… it just might make your stomach hurt.
Oreos have been around for quite some time. The very first standard Oreo sandwich cookie was sold back in 1912, in Hoboken, New Jersey. Since, the design has changed up a bit — but the taste is still a classic.
Oreo ingredients include granulated sugar, flour, water, and — of course —cocoa. All of that is whipped up in a 2,000-pound tub in order to create the dough. That dough enters a molding machine, which morphs each piece into the circle shape you know and love. Business Insider states that this is when they also emboss the Oreo design on every piece. From there, they go into the oven — and it’s not your standard oven, either. It’s 85 meters long, to allow for many chocolate wafers to bake at once.
And now for the best part — the creme. Each wafer is cooled before the mixed cream is dropped on the flat side. From there, they’re sandwiched together. The process sounds seriously mesmerizing.
Of course, you need to see it to really believe it. While the cookies in this video aren’t exactly Oreos, they’re “sandwich cookies,” which is pretty close. No matter what, the machinery is impressive.

According to Delish, the cookies used to be made with lard — but they changed over to vegetable oil sometime during the ’90s. They also claim that technically, Hydrox, which is a similar cookie, came out before Oreo. But alas, Oreo was the brand that got people hooked. (Read about this dark history here.)
Due to its popularity, Oreo isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Here at So Yummy, we are a little obsessed with Oreos, which is why we came up with the best Oreo treat ideas we could think of.
