Mother’s Day is on the horizon (May 13th, if you need an extra reminder) and sometimes, the best way to honor your mom is through a quote. And if that quote happens to involve food, even better.
If you think about it, Mother’s Day and food have a lot in common. It’s a day where mom shouldn’t be cooking for the family — instead, she should be feasting on croissants and fruit salad and brunch mimosas while putting her feet up and relaxing (for once!) Since so many people use food as a sign of love, Mother’s Day should be all about good food. Being a mom is hard work, and it’s often times a little thankless. If she’s shaped you to be a kindhearted, determined individual, she did a wonderful job and deserves to be rewarded with something special.
Now, here’s where things get tricky. Sure, many of us are lucky enough to live a short commute away from our moms, but these days, it’s pretty common to be long-distance. If you’re not able to drive over and celebrate directly with your mom, perhaps a fun Mother’s Day food quote (accompanying some homemade cookies, or strawberries dipped in chocolate you mailed her, because she deserves it) you can text her may do the trick.
If you’re looking for some inspiration, here are a few that might make her chuckle a bit on her special day.
Columnist Erma Bombeck took everyday suburban life and made it hilarious. She’s a great go-to for quotes about families, motherhood, and food. And everything, really.
This quote by author Mark Twain is a good reminder that we shouldn’t worry so much while in the moment. For Mother’s Day, Mom needs to try and enjoy the simple things, and not just the consequences. Even if it’s hard.
Sure, leftovers aren’t necessarily exciting, but pretty much every family can identity with somehow always have leftovers (whatever, leftovers are DELICIOUS). Especially families with a lot of kids who may be picky eaters. All moms wish there was an extra hour or two in the day, and leftover nights are the closest they can get to that. Journalist Calvin Trillin knows what’s up.
Well said, Buddy (heard of this comedian?). Once you get a little older, you start feeling bad for always making a face or saying “This again?” when mom made meatloaf instead of spaghetti. Maybe you can use this quote along with an apology. (I’m sure she’ll forgive you.)

Pizza and hugs have a lot of similarities — both make you feel warm on the inside. Which author Dora J. Arod totally understands. So, if your mom is a fan of pizza (and who isn’t?) this quote may be perfect.
If your mom was responsible for cooking dinner, this quote from novelist and short story writer Laurie Colwin will make her feel special. There’s a chance she was thinking of her own mother when she cooked for you, as cooking (and recreating famous recipes) is an experience that’s all about family.
It’s hard work to be a mom. While she might not have wanted to go home after a day of work and create a meal, she likely still did it, if she was the cook in the family. This quote by Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiaperlli sums up why — because, you only realize the importance and love behind a home cooked meal when you no longer have it. For many of us, that realization happened in college. These acts of love make us happy and remind us how powerful food can be.
The legendary Oscar Wilde understands the true power of a good meal. Moms innately get that food yields the power to bring even the most pissed-off-at-each-other siblings together. You can’t stay mad at each other after a plate of tacos — at least, not as mad, right?

Okay, one more from this poet and playwright. He gets that the seriousness about food. Because food is the best. And moms get that like no other person on this planet.
Amen to that, Julie Child.
No matter who your mom is — whether she’s even a good cook or not — the food she makes will always be memorable. Even if you can’t stand her potato salad, you can’t help but feel like you’re at home every time she offers you some.
