So Yummy
When I was a kid, a birthday cake was a birthday cake. It was typically round, sometimes — but rarely — it included more than one layer, and the combos were endless. Chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, vanilla cake with chocolate frosting, vanilla cake with vanilla frosting, and uh. That’s it. Maybe strawberry. Maybe.
My childhood cakes will always mean a lot to me. Not only were they tasty, but my mom made them, and she was a special lady. It’s hard to imagine what she would have thought of cakes today. Especially the piñata cake, which is going to take over 2018.
Growing up, transferring a photo to a cake was a big deal. And a strange one. Who wants to eat someone’s face? Even though celebs like Ariana Grande are still keeping the tradition alive (just look at the cupcakes from her birthday party), it was pretty much the beginning of birthday cakes becoming more interactive.
The first stage of piñata cakes seemed simple enough — you cut the cake open and a surprise of sprinkles emerged. They were perfect for both Pinterest and Instagram, and made everyone want to give baking a shot. Online, the cakes were sometimes known as “surprise inside” cakes, or “confetti cakes,” due to their colorful nature.

So Yummy discovered these particular piñata cakes at Dessert Goals, an event which celebrates the best sugary snacks, ever. The layered cakes were created by Puesto, a California-based Mexican Artisan Kitchen & Bar with multiple locations (and tons of yummy food.)

There’s something that just seems so intense about a cake you can break open. It’s a dessert and a party activity all in one. While these might not be the best projects for up-and-coming bakers — unless you’re crafting one for your upcoming episode of Nailed It! — you’re bound to see a bunch of similar piñata cake designs at a bakery near you.
Can’t get your hands on a piñata cake? And don’t have the time to bake an actual birthday cake yourself? We’ve discovered several ways you can get away with brining a store-bought cake to the table.
