We all have a favorite snack, right? And we’ve all done things that we’re proud of. What if one of your biggest accomplishments had something to do with your favorite snack? Would you, say, have your cremated ashes buried in the packaging of said snack?
We know — this got dark and weird pretty quickly. (Sorry).
Well, that’s what one man, Fredric J. Baur, did. He was the genius designer behind the Pringles potato crisp packaging system, and he now forever lays at rest within one of his proudest achievements. Baur died in 2008 at the age of 89, and he requested that his children bury his cremated remains in one of the cans.
Yep. A man had his ashes put into a Pringles can.
On one hand, it may seem silly — but on the other, it’s actually pretty sweet. Pringles are the go-to snack for every hungry teen or weekend party-goer, so why wouldn’t he be proud? He put a lot of thought and work into the container, actually filing for a patent on the tubular container in 1966, and getting the rights to it approved in 1970. The rest is history!
Look at this vintage Pringles container! This is SO old-school:
Here’s a vintage Pringles stand. Who needs a Pringles stand? We do!
So is that what Baur did for work? Yep. Baur was an organic chemist and food storage technician working for Proctor & Gamble. His focus was on research and development for quality control. We’d say he did his job well.
Thank you, Fredric J. Baur, for such a cool design. Not only did your container system allow for a little more fun when grabbing for a chip — it also made it lots easier to eat up the crumbs at the very bottom.
So in honor of Baur, we’re going to look at some of our favorite Pringles snacks, pics, and flavors.
We like what this person is thinking. Pringles and Nutella are a match made in, well, weird snack heaven.
Have you tried this Applewood Smoked flavor? We bet it’s delish.
We are HERE for these flavors — especially the bacon! Yum.
We’re also here for this kitty! (And we ALSO hope he can get out).
We get this so hard. Feeling pretty seen right now.
Thank you, Baur, for creating a great snack container to remember!
