17 Of The Most Awkward Food Moments Ever That Are Too Iconic To Forget

When you typically eat three meals a day, there are plenty of opportunities to get it wrong. Either you followed a recipe incorrectly, accidentally sugared your morning eggs at the diner, or perhaps you got more of that spaghetti on your shirt than in your mouth. When you’re in the public eye, you can imagine how much worse those incidents can be.

Awkward food moments are present in pop culture, as well. So many shows from the 1990s and 2000s weren’t afraid to get laughs based on uncomfortable situations around mealtime. Most of the time, they made us laugh because they’re so relatable.

And even though they’re cringeworthy, it’s kind of a good thing to remember that they were simply written to be so.

It may be terrible if they happen to you, but awkward food moments help bond people together. They can liven any gathering, and help color an otherwise dull memory (since hey, knocking down a full coffee carafe at Perkins will make you remember that hangout. Yes, that happened to me.) They’re also a good reminder that we’re all human. All of us will make mistakes, and sometimes the best thing to do is grit your teeth and move on.

Here are some of the most memorably awkward food moments, both on television and in real life.

1. Rachel’s Trifle on Friends

[fm_youtube url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G08pqAaJi5k"]

Any fan of Friends remembers the infamous trifle.

A trifle, by design, usually includes sponge cake, fruit, and a yummy custard filling. But Rachel, being not so great in the kitchen, created hers with beef sautéed with peas and onions. All of it was topped with whipped cream. At the very least, she made the custard from scratch — and you have to applaud her for that.

2. Lil Xan’s Hot Cheetos Hospitalization

When someone likes a snack, it’s very easy for them to go overboard.

Rapper Lil Xan was 22 when the Cheetos incident happened. It’s funny, but also a reminder that these things can be killer on your body. “I went to the hospital today,” he wrote on Instagram, per Men’s Health. “I just want to let everyone know I was in the hospital not due to any drugs, but I guess I ate too many Hot Cheetos, and it ripped something in my stomach open.” Yikes.

3. Chef Ramsay’s “Pissing” Seafood Pancake

Hell’s Kitchen has some of the most unusual contestants, but none of them beat Raj.

His signature dish was something of a mess, making fans unable to think about pancakes the same way again. Remember, this is a legit food competition show, and your signature dish should be what you make best.

4. Everything About Amy’s Baking Company

[fm_youtube url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MC8i0gt5m-Y"]

On the topic of Gordon Ramsay shows, let’s talk about Kitchen Nightmares.

The most memorable episode for sure was Amy’s Baking Company, an operation in which Chef Amy serves up raw pizza and inedible burgers.

But if you don’t like the food, don’t expect a refund. Expect an insult, and a ban from the restaurant. It’s no surprise that they’re no longer in business.

5. Ariana Grande Licks A Donut

Well before her big headline-making engagement (and then break-up) with Pete Davidson, Ariana Grande got into some hot water after licking a donut.

It all happened back in 2015, at a donut shop located in Lake Elsinore, California. The singer put out an apology video, which has since been deleted. But according to CNN, she stated that “Seeing a video of yourself behaving poorly, that you have no idea was taken, is such a rude awakening, that you don’t know what to do,” adding, “I was so disgusted with myself.”

6. Ashlee Simpson Crashes A McDonald’s

Even superstars need a little bit of fast food every once in a while.

But unfortunately, Ashlee Simpson once entered a McDonald’s and made a scene due to a night of drinking. The incident happened in Toronto, and included Simpson actually going behind the counter to yell at a manager.

7. Shailene Woodley Admits She Eats Clay

[fm_youtube url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1Su3dg9vRY"]

There’s something really admirable about Shailene Woodley. She’s an activist who genuinely cares about the environment. She also eats clay that she orders online, sourced from Colorado. She also told Letterman that pregnant women often eat clay, since it’s good for their bodies. Surely pregnant women everywhere will just take her word for it.

8. Liz Lemon Sleep-Eats A Pizza (And Cigarettes)

30 Rock wasn’t afraid to push the limits, but Liz’s relationship with food was serious. Not only did she shotgun a pizza before, but in the 4th season episode titled “Verna,” she ordered and ate an entire pie in her sleep, along with a couple of cigarettes. It’s almost laughably awkward, since that’s something that anyone with insomnia and a craving for cheese might do (maybe not the cigarette part).

9. Szechuan Sauce Causes A Legit Riot

Certain fans of Rick & Morty are super passionate about the show.

But, McDonald’s might not have known that after announcing they’d temporarily bring back the Mulan szechuan dipping sauce that inventor Rick likes so much.

First available in select locations, fans literally made fools of themselves to get their hands on the limited supply. Out of all the awkward food moments so far, this one proved that Rick & Morty has a lot of influence on the world today.

10. George And The Soup Nazi

[fm_youtube url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WRxEY8o3kc"]

It made for a memorable episode and a pretty successful line of soups that non-New Yorkers could buy in stores, but you could almost feel the tension between George and The Soup Nazi in this seventh season Seinfeld episode.

George didn’t get bread with his soup, and instead of letting it go, he ended up hearing the infamous line, “no soup for you!”

11. The Fyre Festival Sandwich Reveal

Guests were promised excellent eats, which made the cheese sandwich they ended up with even sadder. Is that a side salad, or the insides of the sandwich? Who knows, but either choice is upsetting when you think about how much money tickets were.

12. Kendall Jenner’s Pepsi Ad

[fm_youtube url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dA5Yq1DLSmQ"]

Kendall Jenner had an unforgiving year in 2017 — remember, she was one of the many influencers openly supporting the Fyre Festival and their sad cheese sandwiches.

But one of her biggest goofs was participating in the commercial version of an awkward (and insensitive) food moment.

Pepsi released a commercial where, in their eyes, a soft drink could solve a violent protest. It’s easy to see what they were trying to accomplish, but it still came off pretty badly.

13. Adrienne Bailon’s Fruit Punch And Tuna

[fm_youtube url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HagIWj6EyHU&t"]

Listen, weird food combinations are great. They show you’re innovative and happen to tell a story. That said, nobody can get behind Adrienne Bailon’s fruit punch and tuna fish combo. She literally dips her sandwich in the glass, changing its color entirely.

14. Cynthia Nixon’s Bagel Of Choice

Cynthia Nixon is a strong woman who can order anything she wants. But she still made headlines with an awkward food moment of her own not that long ago.

In September of 2018, the actress and past gubernatorial candidate ordered a cinnamon raisin bagel.

Which, okay. But then she topped it with lox, capers, red onions, tomato, and cream cheese.

15. Kevin Spills The Chili

If you ask fans of The Office what one of their favorite awkward food moments is, it’s probably when Kevin brings in his famous chili. While proudly giving the instructions on how to make it, he ends up spilling the entire pot right on the floor. It’s a moment that’ll make anyone cringe, since it’s literally the worst food fail of all.

16. The Fake Image Of Justin Bieber Eating A Burrito

Listen, I don’t know if Justin Bieber even eats burritos. But I do know the world was absolutely fooled when this fake image came into play. Just looking at it will make you feel weird inside. That’s not how it’s done, fake Justin!

17. Ed Sheeran’s Ketchup Ice Cream

Sheeran has made his love of ketchup pretty obvious, with sources saying he carries an emergency bottle at all times.

But he also has the Heinz logo tattooed on his arm to lovingly gaze upon forever.

Not my first choice, but good for him. Heinz also made a ketchup-flavor ice cream thanks to the singer’s appreciation, which adds to the absurdity.
