We’re About To Shatter Your Heart With This Froot Loops Truth

Cereal fans, are you sitting down? Well, you should be. Some terrible news has emerged, and you might never look at your bowl of Froot Loops the same way ever again.

As you know, Froot Loops is supposed to taste like fruit. Or at least, “fruit.” This flavor profile set Froot Loops apart from other O-shaped cereals like Cheerios and Apple Jacks. Obviously, they’ve always been a hit. That’s why they’ve been on shelves for such a long time — since 1963, to be exact. The cereal is multicolored, adding a pop of excitement to breakfast. But while fans were somewhat led to believe that each color represented a different fruit, they’re actually just the same flavor.

It’s oddly heartbreaking, isn’t it? Their colors are literally the only thing setting them apart. In a world where it seems like every day a new food favorite gets pulled due to herbicide scares or an e. Coli risk, this “news” isn’t necessarily bad.

Still, it’s weird how perception works. They really do taste different if you think they’re different.

Froot Loops was never keeping this a secret from their fans.  Back in 1999, The Straight Dope reported on the news after someone wrote in and asked. “The spokescharacter for the cereal isn’t the only thing that’s remained constant since the introduction of Froot Loops in 1963,” the website responded. “The flavor has as well. And that’s singular. According to Kellogg’s, all of those delectable loops are flavored the same.”

If you’re really upset about it, just know that you can at least purchase some variety of flavor when it comes to Froot Loops. This past spring, Froot Loops released a new flavor: Wild Berry. It’s the one part of the cereal that actually tastes differently from the rest of the O-shaped pieces of cereal (it’s also star-shaped). You can buy your own box at the grocery store, nation-wide.

At least that singular flavor is still delicious. And hey — you can still imagine that every colored loop resembles a particular fruit if you really want to. Toucan Sam likely wouldn’t have a problem with it.
