The media (and everyday people in general) have been having a go at Meghan Markle ever since she married Price Harry. We’ve all got royal fever, and it’s clearly not going away anytime soon.
It feels as though we’ve already seen it all with regards to Meghan Markle. The media loves her, then they hate her, then they love her again. In short, it’s really, really hard to exist in the public eye — especially as a woman! Celebrities and other public figures, like Meghan, are scrutinized and judged on a near-constant basis, and it seems exhausting.
The hot topic right now? Everyone is talking about what happened when the duchess was referred to as “a fat lady” during a visit to an animal welfare organization on January 16th.
The comment was said in total jest by an older volunteer woman, who, when meeting Markle, said, “Lovely lady, you are! May the good lord always bless you… And you’re a fat lady!” The woman motioned toward Markle’s pregnant belly when she said it — she’s in her third trimester with her first child — and Markle simply laughed graciously and said, “I’ll take it!”
Markle handled that situation like a pro. To be out working — and open to comments from the public in public — is already nerve-wracking, but to handle the comment about her body with such humor is actually delightful. It’s important to note that many commenters on Twitter shared that they thought the woman was using the word in a complimentary way, or that the word “fat” may have been used as “pregnant.” Either way, the moment was pretty cute.
In general, it makes sense that people are jumping on the discussion of the word “fat.” We shouldn’t forget that “fat” is often used in a shaming and derogatory way — especially in the media. A lot of people love using and reclaiming the word, and that’s great — but we should keep in mind how harmful body comments can be, even if this particular situation wasn’t an issue.
Do my ears deceive me? Quite possibly the first time the Duchess of Sussex has been called a "fat lady" and loved it pic.twitter.com/xR2NelQyAW
