We’ve always been obsessed with the royal family, even though we may not understand most of what life as a royal is really like. There are dress codes, limits on public displays of affection, and appearances that a majority of us will never be forced to attend. Lately, royals Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have especially been on our radar because of their recent marriage and pregnancy announcement. However, the Duchess is often labeled a rule-breaker in the royal family because of her more unconventional ideas, though she still respects some of their traditions.
It’s not nearly as bad as it sounds (though it’s still pretty weird). The tradition supposedly dates back to King Edward VII’s reign, when he was concerned his guests weren’t fed enough. Weighing them before and after would ensure that they were getting enough to eat.
Rumor has it that the modern royal family uses an antique scale and humors the tradition just for the fun of it. It hasn’t been confirmed how much of this is true — the history of the tradition or whether the royal family actually weighs their guests.
This year, Markle and her mother, Doria, will be having their first royal Christmas celebration, so hopefully if the tradition is real, they won’t have to partake if they don’t want to. The Duchess isn’t one for outdated measures, so who knows how she’ll handle the old tradition this Christmas?
