Meghan Markle’s Wedding Cake Is So Hipster, We Can’t Get Over It

There are so many things we love about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as a couple, but the number one thing might be how they’re not at all afraid to do their own thing. This is definitely true for many of their wedding plans, including the food being served. While we don’t know exactly what’s on the menu for the big day, we do know all of the delicious details about the most important dessert of all. And, unsurprisingly, Harry and Meghan’s wedding cake is breaking royal tradition with a very millennial spin (and no, we’re not talking about the food trucks or the possible tiki-themed after-party).

We already knew the basics of what to expect from the cake, after Kensington Palace announced some of the details back in March. The two decided to go with Claire Ptak, owner of the London-based Violet Bakery, and they asked for a lemon elderflower cake that will incorporate “the bright flavors of spring.” The cake is going to be covered in buttercream frosting and decorated with fresh flowers. It sounds delicious, not to mention gorgeous!

That right there is a break from tradition, as fruitcake is what is typically served at a royal wedding. But Ptak just revealed that the shape of the cake will also be totally different than what is expected. She told The Telegraph that instead of building the cake in traditional tiers, it’s going to be served in three parts of varying sizes. As for what that means? We’re not quite sure.

Ptak said, “You’ll have to wait and see on the day. It’s an installation of the way that we’re putting it out. It’s the last thing that we’ll reveal. It’s a non-traditional layout. It’s a slight shift from tradition.” She posted a sample of one of the tiers on her Instagram:

As for the unveiling, that will also be “non-traditional,” although there’s no word on exactly what that means. As Delish pointed out, this kind of non-tiered layout has been really popular in the United States for weddings for a while now and can definitely be considered more of a millennial trend.

One thing is for sure: Harry and Meghan seem happy about it. They taste-tested the cake, and Ptak told The Telegraph, “They loved it. They tried quite a collection. What they said to me is that they really loved the idea of the seasonality and the freshness.”

We might have to wait to see the entire cake, but there are plenty of details to carry us until then. Kensington Palace put out an Instagram story showing the ingredients Ptak is using, which includes 200 lemons (from the Amalfi Coast), 500 organic eggs from Suffolk, 20kg of flour, 20kg of sugar, and 10 bottles of elderflower cordial from the queen’s Sandringham estate. That’s a lot of food!

There’s also a video of Ptak putting the cake together on the Royal Family’s Twitter account. In the video, she reveals that the cake is made of lemon sponge with an elderflower syrup drizzle. There’s also Amalfi lemon curd and Swiss meringue buttercream with elderflower.

Is anyone else dying to eat a piece of this cake right now?! Guess we’ll have to make due with some copycat options for now.
