Princess Charlotte Is “Forbidden” From Sitting With Her Parents At Dinner, And The Reason Why Sounds Harsh

It’s no surprise that the royal family has a strict set of rules they are supposed to follow; most of us have seen the overwhelming amount of guidelines Meghan Markle is supposed to adhere to now that she’s officially the Duchess of Sussex. Sometimes, these royal rules can be broken. Prince Harry and Meghan shattered quite a few customs during their wedding, switching things up in a fresh and more non-traditional way. For the most part, though, the royal family follows the rules — even if they seem kind of strange. One in particular might seem a little off to many Americans: Princess Charlotte is “forbidden” from sitting with her parents at dinner.

Yes, that’s right: Three-year-old Princess Charlotte, the only daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton, is not allowed to sit with her parents while eating dinner. According to Harper’s Bazaar UK, “royal children are reportedly not allowed to sit with the adults until they have learned the ‘art of polite conversation.'” She isn’t the only one being left out: All of the royal children need to eat separately from their parents. So, that goes from Prince George, too. I guess that means there is a permanent kid’s table in their homes for the children who can’t hold up their end of a discussion while eating.

That certainly isn’t the only rule that the youngest members of the royal family have to follow. Harper’s Bazaar UK also reports that they have to learn at least one other language  — Charlotte is already in the process of learning Spanish. She’ll have to learn how to properly sit: apparently, royal women have to sit with their legs, knees, and ankles kept together. Of course, she will also have to learn how to curtsey, something she may already be in the process of doing.

According to Business Insider UK, royal children are not allowed to have nicknames, at least publicly. They even have different holiday traditions. For Christmas, the royal kids open their gifts on Christmas Eve, not Christmas Day.

There’s also the dress code. According to an interview British etiquette consultant William Hanson did with the Sun, young boys are required to wear shorts all the time, which explains Prince George’s routine wardrobe. Princess Charlotte will always be seen in a dress and cardigan, and, if needed, tights.

As amazing as it sounds to be a tiny, adored princess in the United Kingdom, having all of these rules to follow as a three-year-old seems a bit overwhelming!
