Planning a wedding is hard work. Not only do you have to think about things like linen and flower selections, but you also have a bunch of vendors trying to sell you on their goods. Some of those products are a little unnecessary (like ice sculptures or light projections). Others are a little more important. Like, say, food. It’s rare for someone to claim a wedding meal as being one of their all-time favorites, but when someone is served a bad entree, it’s pretty memorable. Aside from being the right thing to do, serving food helps keep your guests happy, and can keep the party going all night long.
Speaking of weddings, still thinking about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s ceremony from last May? You’re not alone. It’s also on the mind of celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, but because of the food. Simply put, he offered to cater the monumental event. For free.
If there’s anything we’ve all learned about the royal family, it’s this — they’re particular about food, and have a penchant for putting on some of the most elaborate weddings of all time. So, it’s not all that surprising that Oliver wasn’t asked to handle the menu. It’s possible the catering was selected even before Harry popped the question.
Oliver is a British celebrity chef who’s been on the scene for quite some time. Not only does he enjoy using organic ingredients, but he’s well versed in plenty of different types of cuisine. Surely he could have cooked something fit for a Duke and Duchess, but they obviously had other plans in mind.
“I did actually write and say if they want the food sorted I would bring the best of British and American chefs together to do the catering,” he said, according to Insider. “I didn’t get a reply.”

Of course, Oliver doesn’t have any hard feelings. “They [Buckingham Palace] are very slick at protocol and getting those gigs done so probably we were a bit renegade,” he added.
Still, it’s fun to imagine what could have been. Oliver puts a lot of delicious food photos on Instagram, so it’s even more fun to envision what Prince Harry and Meghan Markle would have chosen for their guests.
And that’s just the entrees. Oliver is also a master at desserts, if Markle and Prince Harry wanted to serve something besides cake.
The two chose to serve lemon elderflower cake, which is a step away from tradition. And chances are, that’s something Oliver could have very easily whipped up if asked.
Oliver would have been an excellent choice. Perhaps Markle and Prince Harry can make up for the snub by asking him to provide some snacks for their baby shower!
