There’s A Big Salmonella Outbreak That’s Already Affected 8 States

salmonella outbreak

Even though everyone knows that it’s a good idea to eat as much fruits and veggies as possible, it seems as if this food group has been betraying us recently. First, we experienced a huge e.Coli outbreak (this started in March in Arizona), that affected a lot of people who ate romaine lettuce. Shortly after, Salmonella was found in eggs. And now, there’s a recall on one of the summer’s most prominent fruits due to yet another Salmonella outbreak. You might want to check your fridge for pre-cut melon, since that’s the culprit.

The melon that’s causing a health risk comes from Caito Foods out in Indianapolis, and it’s a serious case that’s affected people across multiple states. The Centers for Disease Control reports that 60 people have been infected so far, and 31 people have been hospitalized. Moreover, it seems like a lot of different melons are currently being recalled — fresh cut watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, and fresh-cut fruit medley products are on recall.

The melon in question was delivered to Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and North Carolina.

It was shipped to multiple stores, including Walgreens, Jay C, Kroger, Payless, Owen’s, Sprouts, Costco, Trader Joe’s, Walmart, and Whole Foods/Amazon. The product itself came in a clear package that resembled a clamshell.

Salmonella causes food poisoning, and symptoms usually include vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and chills. It’s an infection that’s passed through contaminated food and water. It’s typically not fatal, but people have died from Salmonella in the past.  Severe cases often require an IV and about a week of recovery time.

If you live in one of those states and recently purchased melon from one of these outlets, make sure to get rid of it ASAP. It’s tough to stay away from melon (especially if you love fruit salad as a side for brunch), but Salmonella is a big risk that you’ll want to avoid if possible.
