Its legacy dates back to 1198 and has served famous literary writers including James Joyce and historic rebels who used the pub as a meeting place for the Irish revolution. It is rumored the ghost of Irish Nationalist, Robert Emmet, protects the pub from enemies.

The pub is famous for its discovery of many traditional Irish folk music groups including The Dubliners.
