Oh My God. Some Of Our Favorite Desserts Were Just Recalled, And When Will It End?

For the love of sweet and savory, please end this Salmonella outbreak. On July 23rd, the FDA announced that yet another one of our beloved treats has been recalled and we’re at our wits end. Flowers Foods, Inc., maker of Swiss Rolls, has voluntarily recalled the dessert sold under the brands Mrs. Freshley’s, Food Lion, H-E-B, Baker’s Treat, Market Square, and Great Value.

Flower Foods, Inc. also recalled Captain John Derst’s Old Fashioned Bread along with their Swiss Rolls. This occurred after the company was notified of possible traces of Salmonella in the whey powder used to manufacture the bakery items.

Swiss Rolls and Captain John’s Derst’s Old Fashioned Bread joins Goldfish, Ritz, and Kellogg’s Honey Smacks on the growing list of products that have also been recalled due to Salmonella contamination.

No illnesses have been linked to any Flowers Foods Inc. products in which the tainted whey powder was used. But consumers who have products with recalled UPC numbers and expiration dates are urged to discard or return the product to receive a refund.

On July 25th, Associated Milk Producers Inc. (AMPI) recalled several of their whey powder packages used to make the above food goods after the Salmonella outbreak was linked to their ingredient. This was simply a precautionary recall, the FDA points out, and companies who use AMPI’s whey powder have been instructed to return recalled whey powder packages.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause extreme diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, fever, and stomach cramping, the FDA reports. Although Salmonella usually exits a person’s system on its own, in more rare cases, the infection can enter the bloodstream and cause further, more severe, illnesses like arterial infections (infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.

Because whey powder is used in many of our favorite junk foods, we suspect the Swiss Rolls recall will not be the last. Make sure to discard any recalled foods and keep your eye on the FDA recall page to make sure Salmonella doesn’t move into your home.
