If you’ve got kids in the house — or are simply a huge fan of snacks — you probably heard the upsetting news that Pepperidge Farm recalled a few varieties of Goldfish crackers after being cautious over a Salmonella outbreak. The culprit? Whey powder that was used in some of their Flavor Blasted products. It was tough news to swallow, especially since they’re such a popular snack. Even though nobody reported illness prior to the recall, a lot of people are outraged. And since this is the internet, a lot of the comments about the Goldfish recall are actually somewhat hysterical.
First thing’s first — Salmonella is no laughing matter. Pepperidge Farm was so scared of the possibility of an outbreak that the recall was simply cautionary. In fact, on Twitter, they referred to it as a “voluntary recall.” It’s smart for the company to do this, especially since their product is popular with kids.
Even though young babies likely aren’t eating solids just yet, they’re at significant risk of serious complications if Salmonella strikes. For others, the bacteria will cause unpleasant symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Symptoms can last up to a week.
Even though it seems like no product is ever fully safe, some fans on Twitter chose to get a little crazy over the big announcement from the company.
Goldfish are being recalled and I have a package at my desk and I literally just considered eating them and getting salmonella just to get out of here rather than checking the info, so that's how my day's going, how about you

What am I supposed to pair with my wine now?
Goldfish being recalled might be the worst thing that has happened yet this year

While it seems like people can’t get enough Goldfish, a few fans did tweet at Pepperidge Farm to report illness that might be linked to the recall.

The news is tough to handle, especially since the world thought they could always depend on Goldfish crackers. If you also think you’ve consumed a tainted bag of Flavor Blasted Xtra Cheddar, Whole Grain Xtra Cheese, Flavor Blasted Sour Cream & Onion, or their Mix Xtra Cheddar + Pretzel flavors, discontinue use and consider getting medical attention. Also, consider reaching out to the company to speak with a customer service representative.
