Super Foods Your Body Needs to Fight the Winter Flu

Health experts are predicting this season to be the worst cold and flu season we have seen in a long time. No one wants to constantly dab their dripping nose while a growing pile of tissues surrounds your desk. Take care of yourself to prevent the cold and flu virus from finding a home in your immune system. If you happen to get sick, your diet can play a big role in helping you have a speedy recovery.

Preventative

Foods Rich in Probiotics

Yogurt, fermented fruit, and vegetables are filled with probiotics that help build good bacteria in your immune system to fight off germs and sickness.

Garlic

Garlic is a superfood that helps your body fight off antibiotic-resistant viruses in your body. According to the MRSA, garlic can also help fight off yeast infections, viruses, and parasites (oh, and the occasional vampire!)

Sweet Potato

The more color your food has the more it can boost your immune system. Sweet potatoes contain higher levels of phytonutrients, which are key to building a strong immune system to fight off bad bacteria and viruses.

Blueberries fall into the same category as sweet potatoes, but research has found that blueberries help fight off bacteria reaching your lungs and causing damage.

Broccoli 

Filled with Vitamin C and sulforaphane, broccoli sprouts protect your body and immune system from the cold or flu for longer than many other healthy foods. I guess Mom was right, we really need to eat our broccoli at every meal.

When Sick

Chicken Soup

All those times you were sick as a kid and your parents served you soup was actually an essential part of making you feel better. The broth in chicken soup has an anti-inflammatory effect that helps soothe swollen throats. It can keep your body hydrated and flush out bad germs and bacteria that are living in your system.

Bananas

Bananas are loaded with vitamin B6 and help fight off fatigue and infection.

Ginger

Ginger is an all natural food that helps settle upset stomachs, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and cold sweats.

Citrus

Citrus fruits are loaded with antioxidants to help you get over your cold or flu. Oranges and grapefruit are the best to eat because they are relatively low in sugar.

You can buy oil of oregano in a dropper and place a few drops under your tongue or on the spine of your back. Viruses can harbor along your spinal chord and the oil helps kill the bacteria directly through the skin.
