Wow, Sorry, You’ve Been Eating Burgers The Wrong Way Forever

right way to eat burgers

Love burgers? It’s hard not to. They come in so many varieties that even vegetarians can easily join in for a summer cookout. But even though you might feel as if you’re qualified to dethrone the Burger King himself, you may not know a simple trick that makes eating a burger so much easier. Seriously. Once you learn it, you’ll basically know that you’ve been eating them wrong this whole time.

An article from INSIDER chatted up Simon Dukes, who founded the blog Burger Lad. In his eyes, the best way to eat a burger is upside down. Yes, it sounds (and looks) ridiculous, but it’s a lot easier to handle.

Think of it this way. The best burgers are juicy and satisfying. But the overabundance of juice — as well as the addition of toppings like veggies and bacon, if that’s your preference — often makes the best burgers fall apart.

Everybody in this world has had a handful of burger crumbling incidents. It’s not graceful, but it’s generally accepted at parties and in restaurants.

On a typical burger, the top bun is much thicker than the bottom. But thanks to a thing called gravity, the bottom bun ends up absorbing all the juice and becomes hard to hold (hello, wet bun). By flipping it, you can have better control over the whole thing. This may sound polarizing, but it does make sense.

“Burgers are served the way they are purely for aesthetics,” Dukes explained, adding “A true burger connoisseur should always eat their burgers upside down.”

If the mess is the reason why you’ll avoid a burger while dining out, this may very well be the solution you were looking for. And when people ask, science will back you up. The top bun is simply more supportive of weight.

Still, something about turning a burger upside down seems…wrong. Perhaps it’s something you’ll want to try at home and not at Red Robin, where you may feel a little judged.
