Remember the Cronut? People couldn’t stop talking about the croissant-donut pastry collaboration. Then donuts took a healthier, more trendy turn: You can buy them vegan, gluten-free, paleo, you name it. But if that’s all too tame for you, we have some exciting news. A new, superweird donut hybrid has been created, and it’s pretty…interesting. Someone spliced a donut with chicken nuggets. It’s called a “donug” (donut + chicken nugget = donug) and the discovery comes with so many questions. Like, for one, why?
Here’s some good news — it seems like the donug’s similarity to a donut mostly starts and ends with shape. The donut seems to be a rounded piece of chicken that’s shaped just like a standard donut — round, with a hole in the center. Donugs also have toppings, but they seem to be pretty close to what you’d sauce up some chicken with. So, it’s not like you’d be getting chicken with chocolate chips and sprinkles. Phewf, okay.
Crag Carrick thinks the donug can be incredibly profitable. He believed in his product so much that he appeared on Shark Tank Australia. There, he explained the creation a little more. Currently, you can top your donug with one of three different sauces — cheesy dijon bechamel, a Japanese curry and mozzarella mix, or a hot chili sauce. He impressed the investors enough to score a $100,000 deal, meaning that the donug might someday be a common way to enjoy chicken.
Once you see one, you’ll start craving fried chicken. Just look.
Wondering where you can get your hands on one? That’s the bad news — especially for Americans. These are currently being made overseas, with their website simply stating “coming soon to an eatery near you.” According to Instagram, the creators travel. For example, last week they stated that the “only place to grab a Donug this weekend and next is off the map at @theredhillhotel in Victoria.” Which is not very helpful for us (unless that’s where you live, you lucky duck).
Hopefully the business explodes and they find a way to make donugs available for everyone. Of course, you can also try making your own at home — but that’s nowhere near as fun.
