Woman Notices Elderly DoorDash Driver Struggling on Her Doorstep. Her Response Helps Raise Over $960K in Donations

What started as an ordinary Starbucks delivery turned into a life-changing moment for a 78-year-old DoorDash driver in Tennessee. When Brittany Smith checked her Ring camera, she expected to see a routine drop-off. Instead, she saw an elderly man gripping the handrail and slowly climbing her front steps, carefully making his way to the door with her order.
Smith later told The Independent that she was struck by how hard the short walk seemed for him. The video clip, only about 20 seconds long, showed the man, identified as Richard, taking deliberate steps before placing the drink at the door. It was a small moment, but one that stayed with her.
At first, Smith simply wanted to tip him more. But when she realized she could not increase the tip through the app, she turned to social media to try to track him down. She posted the clip asking for help identifying the “precious” man in the video, never imagining how far the story would travel.
The Story Behind the Delivery

Thanks to online responses, Smith learned Richard’s full name and eventually discovered why he was still working at 78. According to Smith’s GoFundMe page, Richard had started delivering for DoorDash after his wife lost her job through no fault of her own. After covering monthly expenses and paying for medication, the couple had little money left.
