A Florida man is facing serious charges after authorities accused him of stealing thousands of dollars worth of trading cards from multiple Target stores across the state. Investigators say the unusual theft operation took place between Miami and Orlando over several months.

According to the Florida Attorney General’s office, the suspect, 39 year old Keith Wallis, allegedly carried out the scheme repeatedly between July 2025 and February 2026. Authorities claim the method allowed him to walk out of stores with valuable merchandise while appearing to make a legitimate purchase.

What makes the case unusual is the tool investigators say he used to pull it off. Instead of sophisticated technology or complicated tricks, the alleged theft relied on something far more ordinary: 99 cent taco seasoning packets.

Investigators believe Wallis entered Target stores and selected large boxes of trading cards, items that can be highly valuable to collectors. At the same time, he would grab several inexpensive taco seasoning packets.

When he reached the self-checkout register, authorities say he scanned and paid only for the seasoning packets. The much more expensive trading cards allegedly went unscanned, allowing him to leave the store with them without paying their full price.

By pairing cheap items with expensive ones, the purchases appeared legitimate at a quick glance. Officials say this tactic helped him repeat the process dozens of times without immediately attracting suspicion.

Authorities allege the stolen trading cards did not stay in Wallis’ possession for long. Investigators say the items were resold online through eBay, turning the stolen merchandise into cash.

According to officials, the online sales generated nearly 40,000 dollars in revenue. Meanwhile, Target reportedly suffered more than 10,000 dollars in losses tied directly to the alleged thefts.

The investigation suggests the activity may have been part of a larger pattern. Authorities believe the suspect could also be linked to similar thefts at Walmart and Publix locations across Florida.

Serious Charges and Possible Prison Time

Wallis was eventually arrested and now faces multiple felony charges. These include organized retail theft, dealing in stolen property, and money laundering connected to the alleged resale operation.

If convicted on all counts, officials say he could face up to 90 years in prison. As of late February, court records had not yet listed a defense attorney representing him.

Law enforcement leaders say the case highlights the growing issue of organized retail theft. Officials argue that schemes like this ultimately increase costs for businesses and shoppers, prompting authorities to pursue strict penalties against those involved.
