You’ve probably heard about starting your day off right and assumed it was about coffee. Because coffee in the morning is kind of important. For John Legend, though, it’s something else entirely. The musician actually pours himself a bowl of leafy greens in the morning, and that mental image is just confusing.
Typically when you’re checking out a fast food breakfast menu, salad is nowhere to be found.
It’s usually a more popular choice for lunch and dinner. Even though salad is a tasty way to get a little more nutrition in your life, it just doesn’t seem all that appetizing right after waking up.
Legend started eating salads for breakfast after feeling pressured to focus more on his health.
As a father of two, it’s important for him to be in his best shape — especially since his oldest, Luna, is an active toddler. Born in 1978, Legend is currently 40 and an activist for healthy choices.
In fact, the singer partnered with NakedJuice to talk about people’s journey toward a healthier lifestyle. Even though it’s a short video, he made a point to plug salad for breakfast.
Sorry, buddy. You’re a great guy and a talented musician, but I just don’t think you’re going to make morning salads a “thing.”
According to the singer, the morning salad was inspired by a trip to his doctor. Legend has cholesterol issues in his family, so it’s something he wanted to get ahead of.
“My doctor told me that I needed more antioxidants in my diet because I had hereditary cholesterol issues, and he told me that adding vegetables was a good way to address it, so I started having something green with every meal,” Legend said to People.
“Breakfast, lunch and dinner.”
There are plenty of ways Legend could have done this that didn’t resort to prepping a salad. Like, how about a spinach omelet?
Or, maybe a green smoothie? Making vegetable-heavy smoothies can be a great way to stay healthy.
But, no. Legend makes a simple, yet nutritious, salad.
His wife, Chrissy Teigen, used to be a little weirded out by the ritual.
But these days, it’s become so routine that she’s just used to it.
“The shock has worn off, but when I started doing it [Chrissy] was like, ‘What are you doing?'” Legend said to People.
He doesn’t go too crazy with toppings, which is also something to consider.
In fact, when asked, he said his typical morning salad was”leafy with a little vinaigrette.” So, I’m guessing he just combines mixed greens with a little bit of dressing for flavor.
Even though a breakfast salad seems strange, it’s likely a quick breakfast that’ll get him ready for the day. Surely Teigen helps keep him healthy as well.
As you probably know, she’s known for her cooking.
The model has two cookbooks that are currently available and is also quick to document new recipes on her Instagram account.
“We show a lot of the things we cook, but there’s a lot we don’t show,” Legend told People.
“And even if we’re making things for the cookbook, that doesn’t mean we’re having massive portions of it. Everything’s in moderation.”
Legend isn’t the first person to eat salad for breakfast. There are plenty of people lamenting on Twitter that they’ve done the same thing before.

It seems like those who are trying to get into a new fitness regime think it’ll help their results. Well, it definitely can’t hurt.
But when Legend posted the video announcing his salad for breakfast routine, some of his fans seemed more worried than amused.
Obviously, celebrities live their lives differently, but this just seems a little too weird — especially when your wife is a home chef.
But honestly? You shouldn’t knock something before trying it out.
Maybe eating some leafy greens in the morning will really make a difference in your concentration and productivity.
Food is fuel, after all.
Still, it’s a hard sell.
Especially when pancakes and waffles exist. But, kudos to Legend for taking one for the team.
