Krispy Kreme Is Upgrading Their Donuts In An Insane Way

Krispy Kreme donut sandwiches

Your Krispy Kreme experience is about to get even sweeter. Many fast food and dessert chains have responded to the bad-for-business war against sugar by introducing “healthier” options. For example, see Dunkin’s Breakfast Bowls and vegetarian sausage, and McDonald’s intended alterations to the traditional Happy Meal, which are set to be in effect around at least half of the world by 2022. But in a bold new move, Krispy Kreme is going in almost the total opposite direction.

Rather than update their menu to included healthy-ish options, the company just announced that they will be transforming their restaurants into all-out shrines to the glory of glucose-fueled gluttony. On a Facebook post announcing the opening of a brand new store in Concord, NC, on July 23rd, Krispy Kreme teased that they would be serving “brand new tasty treats.” But this wasn’t just a store opening: this was a chance for Krispy Kreme to unveil their first large-scale redesign effort in over 10 years. In a press release, they explained that this is just the first of 45 of these new-style shops that will be opening from now until 2020. And we’re just as excited as they are.

So what’s the big deal? Well, how does Krispy Kreme ice cream sound?

EXACTLY. Krispy Kreme haas added not just any old ice cream, but donut-infused ice cream.

And what better way to eat donut-infused ice cream than in the middle of a donut?

Krispy Kreme is calling their ice cream sandwiches “scoop sandwiches,” and they come with a variety of toppings. Flavors include Vanilla Sprinkled, Triple Chocolate, and Chocolatey Caramel Coconut. But some people will just never be impressed:

There’s already a market for counterfeits…

But is it donut-infused? I think not.

Returning to the important subject of toppings, donuts from the new-look stores will be more customizable than ever. Customers will be able to choose from five different glazes, five drizzle flavors, and 10 toppings.

Oh, and did we mention that there will be milkshakes?

Fortunately, Krispy Kreme will be on the right side of this arbitrary and unenforceable law, because their new milkshakes will be made from the donut-infused ice cream we’re already dreaming about, topped with whipped cream and, naturally, a mini glazed donut.

Us too.

Even if you just want your regular old glazed Krispy Kreme, the press release explained that the new stores will be able to help you get it quicker, thanks to online ordering systems, self-serve in-store pickups, parking spots reserved for mobile-ordered pickups, and a two-lane drive-thru. One visitor to the opening confirmed that it’s pretty cool:

At least one Twitter user is concerned that all this change will mean missing out on the very best Krispy Kreme experience:

But rest easy, lover of hot donuts exclusively, because it’s not just the food that’s getting a revamp. Remember the classic conveyor belt with the waterfall of icing?

Of course you do — it’s one of the chain’s main selling points:

We’ve all been hypnotized by the slow roll of the donuts towards their delicious sugary drenching:

And they just taste better straight from the conveyor.

It seems that these new stores will be even more impressive, at least according to the press release, which announces: “New shop features will include an enhanced doughnut theater experience, offering an end-to-end view of the doughnut making process.” We’d like front row seats to that show.

Krispy Kreme hasn’t confirmed where these sugary havens will be opening, just that they will be in current and new markets (so basically anywhere), although they added that they plan to remodel their “current shop network” too. Donut-flavored milkshakes could be in your future very soon.
