The “Game of Thrones” Cast Couldn’t Stop Eating This One Sandwich While Filming Season 8

Before their epic battles, nutty Night King-slaying, and tearful final shoots, the cast and crew of Game of Thrones needed some serious fuel before cameras started rolling. While filming Season 8, the cast and crew of Thrones pretty much survived on one epic sandwich that needs a show of its own. It’s called the “fully loaded toastie,” and everyone from Winterfell to King’s Landing loved it.

In the HBO documentary The Last Watch, which aired May 26th and detailed the production of Thrones Season 8, fans learned what kept the team going through their long days of shooting the final season.

Leigh McCrum, who ran the on-set coffee truck (that may or may not have been the source of the now-infamous Winterfell coffee cup), put together famous fully loaded toastie almost by accident. She told The Last Watch camera crew that she actually made the sandwich for herself the first time. Someone on set caught wind of the unique sammy and asked to try it out. Word spread that it was the most delicious thing in all of Westeros, and soon enough, everyone was asking for a fully loaded toastie.

And we can totally understand why it became a crowd favorite. We’re absolutely making this for our Game of Thrones rewatch marathon.

To make the toastie, McCrum first starts with two slices of tiger bread (a loaf of bread with a mottled crust). She then piles on cheese, bacon, chicken, ham, tomato, onion and tobacco onions, which are super-thin and crispy onion rings like the ones on the hamburger below.

The entire sandwich is then pressed like a panini so it gets melty, hot, and juicy. Um, yum. McCrum said that she tried to keep everyone on set healthy by stocking her truck with veggies and good-for-you snacks. But, most of the cast and crew wanted things that would give them energy throughout their 14 weeks of night shoots.

When you’re fighting off White Walkers, you need something hearty in your stomach.

The fully loaded toastie is basically a beefed-up club sandwich, pun intended. And btw, did you know that “club” stands for Chicken, Lettuce Under Bacon? One Irish Thrones extra had no idea, and neither did most Last Watch viewers.

Who would have thought we’d learn the meaning of a Club sandwich from Game of Thrones? We certainly didn’t.

We may all have *thoughts* about the finale, but at least we can come together and rejoice over learning something new about a sandwich. Thanks, GoT.

Fingers crossed she picked sandwich. That’s what a true fan would choose.

Seriously. Everyone is freaking out about club sandwiches, now.

Tbh, this epiphany is making us hungry. Chicken, Lettuce Under Bacon sammies, anyone?

And now, thanks to Sir Andy McClay, we all feel smarter. We’ll gladly give the Lord of Club Sandwich a follow.

If you haven’t checked out The Last Watch on HBO yet, we highly recommend it. It’s incredible how much work (and food) went into creating the world of Westeros.

And to see how much emotion these actors put into their characters is unreal. They’ve been filling these shoes for ten years and the growth is real.

Plus, we got to see Kit Harington cry over he and Emilia Clarke’s final scene. It was precious.

Then again… maybe he’s simply recalling some mind-blowing information he learned earlier that week. Chicken, Lettuce Under Bacon plays over and over in his head.

Check out The Last Watch while chowing down on your own version of a fully loaded toastie. We have a feeling it’ll be a great experience.
