There’s a lot to love about wedding season: getting dressed up in fancy clothes, watching two people you love tie the knot, and dancing the night away under the stars. But our hands-down favorite part of a wedding is when the newlyweds cut the cake. Because after the adorable photo opp and obligatory cake face smash, we get to eat said cake. From decorating with black frosting to topping your cake with rough icing, there have been many new wedding cake trends so far in 2018. And we’ve been on board with all of them. But now, there’s a new trend we’re not so sure about: doing away with wedding cake altogether and serving meat pie wedding cake instead. Um, what?

Sam Jacobson, chef and owner of Stargazy, a British bakery in Philadelphia, may have started the next big thing. It’s such a simple idea: savory wedding cakes. When two of his regular customers got engaged, they asked him to whip up something extra special for their big day. So, he went beyond the traditional wedding cake and baked them a meat pie wedding cake.

Jacobson’s three-tiered creation featured two pork pies and one vegetarian layer with spring veggies and eggs. He topped the whole thing with fresh produce from the farmer’s market. All in all, the meat pie wedding cake took him about 12 hours to make. And it’s easy to see why, because it’s a work of art.

Feast your eyes on the epic meat pie wedding cake:

Here’s a closer look at the crust and the inside of one of the layers:

After the wedding, Jacobson began testing different flavors and fillings. “It needs to be a filling that’s firm enough that it won’t spill out when you slice it,” he told Food & Wine. “But other than that, it can be anything — it can be cake batter inside, so you have a cake inside a pie.” We’ll take ten, please.

Jacobson even made another meat pie wedding cake in honor of the year’s biggest nuptials: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding.

“Wedding cakes tend to be an afterthought,” Jacobson continued. “But they can be really good, depending on how much thought you put into it. They can be anything you want them to be.”

We’re not sure we’d want to swap out a traditional wedding cake for a meat pie wedding cake. But we appreciate the thought, creativity, and skill that went into the creation. Who knows? Maybe meat pies are about to sweep the wedding scene.

If you’re looking for wedding cake hacks to help you embrace these trends on a budget, we’ve got you covered.

We wish you a marriage as sweet as your cake!
