Is this real life or are we living on the set of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory? A fantastical fruit called the Blue Java Banana looks and tastes like something out of a kid’s picture book. But lucky for us, it’s not something that exists only in one’s imagination. The Blue Java Banana is very real and you can plant a tree of the fruit in your own backyard.
What’s so special about the Blue Java Banana, you ask? For starters, it’s actually blue. The fruits look like a standard banana, but they’re a dusty teal color rather than a regular yellow. A Blue Java Banana tree seriously looks like a plant out of that movie Avatar, and we’re here for it.
Secondly, Blue Java Bananas are also called “ice cream bananas” because they taste like vanilla ice cream. Guys — we’re not kidding. This is a real thing!
According to HowStuffWorks.com, the white fruit of the Blue Java tastes like vanilla custard or ice cream. It can either be eaten raw like a regular banana, smashed into a smoothie, or frozen to make an all-natural dessert. Just imagine all the sweet treats you could make with a vanilla-flavored banana. Breakfast would never be the same.
Blue Java Bananas are native to Hawaii, parts of Asia, and Australia, which means those living in these parts of the world can buy a bunch of Blue Javas and harvest the black seeds for growing purposes.
However, for the rest of us, we’re going to need to order seeds online in order to start our Blue Java Banana farm.
Fast-Growing-Trees.com offers Blue Java seeds, and their customer reviews are stellar. However, the site is currently sold out of seeds, so you’ll have to join the waitlist.
The great thing about Ice Cream Bananas is that they can survive in cooler climates compared to their cousins. As long as they have plenty of sunlight, and are able to be moved inside when temperatures really drop, then you can try to grow a Blue Java plant on your property.
So, who’s in to give the Blue Java a go? We certainly are.
Just imagine all your favorite banana treats, but served with Blue Javas instead. Chocolate chip banana bread would be even more vanilla-y.
Banana pancakes would taste just like regular cake. Yum.
Using Blue Javas in lieu of regular bananas would turn our world upside down. We just know it.
Once you buy a Blue Java plant (or sprout the seeds), it will take a couple years for the plant to actually start producing good-sized bananas. Even so, you’ll start to see your plant growing larger within a matter of days upon arrival.
“They’ve certainly grown and one has a large shoot growing,” one customer of Fast-Growing-Trees.com wrote in June 2019. “My intention is to plant them outside but I want to see what what sun/shade combination is the best. So far-so good!”
“I ordered a plant about 20 days ago, and it has now sprouted two new leaves!” another customer wrote in May 2019. “The first two were a bit damaged in transit, but honestly I was surprised that they were alive at all, given that plants don’t do well during long [traveling] distances.”
We’re excited to hear more from customers once they start seeing bananas sprout. In the meantime, we need to get ourselves on that waiting list.
Blue Java seeds are also available through Amazon if you’re too antsy to wait for Fast-Growing-Trees.com to restock. The reviews aren’t that great, but for less than $2 per pack, you may just be willing to take the risk.
If you manage to get your hands on a plant or some seeds, let us know how your growing process goes — and absolutely share photos of the bananas once they start to sprout.
The hardest part will be waiting for the Ice Cream Bananas to appear. But patience is a virtue, friends.
If these Blue Javas can make us feel like we’re living in Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, then we’re all for ’em.
