This Man Likes To Punch His Sandwiches Before Eating Them, And The Internet Is Concerned

punching sandwiches

We’re all for channeling aggression in a healthy and productive way. For some, that could mean enrolling in a local boxing class. Others might want to relax with some mindful meditation. Heck, even screaming into a pillow every once in a while can help. But punching sandwiches? That’s one we haven’t heard before.

To be fair, Ben Armson didn’t start punching sandwiches as a way to release pent-up anger. Rather, the BuzzFeed staffer insists that doing so makes his sandwiches “taste so much better.” Perhaps relieving some tension is just a side effect of landing a few well-placed blows to a slice of bread? But we digress.

On Tuesday, June 18th, Armson published a BuzzFeed story attempting to explain the reasons behind his strange sandwich-making behavior.

“Now I know this might sound a little crazy, but trust me, this little trick will actually make your sandwich taste so much better,” Armson wrote. “I am very serious about this. I genuinely believe that to make a sandwich taste as good as it possibly can, you need to punch it repeatedly before eating it.”

Okay, Ben, you’ve sufficiently piqued our interest.

Ben published his story on BuzzFeed after first taking to Instagram to “innocently share [his] sandwich punching quirk.”

Ben was seemingly surprised at the online reaction to his sandwich-making ways.

“I was amazed by the amount of reactions and comments I received,” he wrote. “Sandwich punching has always been a very normal part of my life so I really wasn’t expecting everyone to be so perplexed by it.”

Unsurprisingly, though, some Instagrammers were worried about his behavior.

“In fairness, I kind of get it,” he admitted. “Sandwich punching is obviously not your everyday activity, but to me an un-punched sandwich just doesn’t cut the mustard.” Pun intended?

Others, however, admitted they were going to give punching sandwiches a try.

“This was a huge win for me and for sandwich punching!” he wrote. Go Ben!

Naturally, his BuzzFeed colleagues had a barrage of questions for him the next day.

“After the initial shock and comments of me being a psychopath, there were a lot of questions. People seemed genuinely intrigued (as well as little scared) as to my reasoning,” Ben continued.

He saw it as the perfect opportunity to get other BuzzFeeders to try his technique.

The rules were simple.

First, each participant had to make two versions of the same sandwich: one punched, one normal (er, “regular”).

Then, each taste-tester took a bite of both sandwiches before deciding which was “tastier.”

“Disclaimer: This test is not about the quality of the actual sandwich. It is about comparing the two sandwiches, un-punched vs. punched,” Ben wrote.

Josie, the first taste-tester, didn’t think her coworker’s sandwich-punching technique made a difference. Sorry, Ben!

Ben emerged victorious in the end, when Ayesha and Hanifah agreed that punching sandwiches gave their lunches a little something extra.

Congratulations, Ben!
