If you’ve lived with roommates or worked at an office, you’ve probably been a victim before. Stolen food is no joke, especially if it’s a favorite leftover or something you were just really looking forward to eating. But one woman took it so far as to demand her roommates get DNA tested to figure out which one had been stealing her yogurt, which is super extreme.
The woman in question studies at the Chinese Culture University in Taipei and currently lives with five other women. As dealing with six people in one living space is tough no matter what, it’s understandable that she snapped when she saw an empty yogurt container in the trash. Not only did someone take something she purchased, but nobody fessed up to the crime.
So, she took matters into her own hands. She took the container and went to the police station. The officer took her case seriously — since theft is theft — and asked her roommates to come down for DNA testing. Yes, for real.
Munchies reports that $500 worth of testing was done before finding the culprit, who was actually charged with theft. So food thieves, be aware — even if it seems like a petty crime to you, people might start taking these things more seriously.
In all honesty, a note or a roommate meeting probably would have worked fine. When living with others, sometimes your roommates have different food rules, and if boundaries are never established, things may get out of control. But in general, it’s just important to remember that if you didn’t buy it, and nobody told you that you could take it, assume it’s off limits.
