For us “normal” people, honeymoons typically happen right after a wedding — the happy couple departs for their destination of choice the day after they get married, or maybe two days later, if they want a little extra time. But Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are far from “normal,” and so you may have noticed that they haven’t started their honeymoon just yet — the two were photographed at their first event together as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex a few days after their wedding. So when it is happening? Well, we’re not sure. Harry and Meghan are replanning their honeymoon due to safety concerns, and it seems pretty serious.
A month ago, sources told Travel + Leisure what Harry and Meghan were planning to do for their first romantic vacation as a married couple, and it sounded amazing. Unfortunately, it probably also ruined the plans. Royal expert and ABC News‘s royal contributor during the wedding Omid Scobie spoke to Elle about the honeymoon, saying that as soon as the press hears about the plans, those plans need to be changed. So basically, because of our need to know the whereabouts of the royal couple, they need to re-route their plans. Eeek! It’s not just about their well-deserved privacy, but also a serious issue about their safety.
Scobie said, “The honeymoon destination has changed a few times since they started planning. If a location leaks prior to travel, it compromises their safety on the trip, and they’ll be advised by their protection team to change plans. William and Kate’s protection officers ended up doing recon on two destinations before they settled on the Seychelles for their 2011 honeymoon.”
The original honeymoon plan, in case you weren’t following along, was supposedly for the two to go to Namibia in Africa, at luxury spot Hoanib Valley Camp. That info was quickly picked up and spread around. It was never confirmed that they would go there, and so we don’t know if they definitely planned to stay in Namibia, but it seems like they definitely won’t be headed there anymore.

However, Scobie believes that the royal couple will still be going to Africa for their honeymoon, just in another spot. He points out the huge role Africa has played in Harry and Meghan’s adorable relationship: It was where they fell in love when Harry took Meghan there after only two dates (talk about moving quickly!), it was where they went on vacation for Meghan’s 36th birthday, and it was where Harry bought the center diamond for Meghan’s ring. Scobie said, “It’s the one side of the world where Harry says he feels like he can be himself. He has laid roots there and has a huge amount of love and respect for the African continent. The couple have been keen to explore other countries in Africa, and I’m certain we will see them do that on this honeymoon.”
Scobie thinks they may go somewhere by the sea, maybe the Seychelles or Zanzibar, and probably somewhere that will really allow them to explore as well. However, he said, “The most important thing will be making sure it’s somewhere they can feel safe and have privacy.”

We know one thing for sure: Whatever destination they end up heading to, we won’t know about it. The honeymoon plans are being kept top secret, as they should be! Harry and Meghan definitely deserve some rest and relaxation, and of course, they deserve a lot of privacy on such a special trip. Let’s hope they’re able to get it!
