It’s not always good news when a famous chain announces a name change — just ask IHOP. But unlike IHOP, Dunkin’ Donuts announced a rebrand that’ll actually be permanent. They’re simplifying things by dropping “Donuts” from their name. Now, it doesn’t mean they’re going to stop selling donuts. But it does mean that they want their focus to be on their other products.
Even if you’ve been calling it “Dunkin'” for years, something still isn’t flowing with the name. If someone said they worked at Dunkin’, I can imagine people getting a little confused. Especially since Duncan is a popular name choice for an actual human. As of now, it just sounds so incomplete — and it’s strange to think that all of the Dunkin’ Donuts merch out there will now be considered collectibles based on their strange new, abbreviated identity.
Eventually, it’ll probably stick — it’s not like they’ve chosen a brand new name entirely. Plus, it’s not like Dunkin’ is going anywhere anytime soon, especially since their delicious donut fries were just released. But that doesn’t mean that people didn’t make jokes about the big announcement.
Here are just some of the funny and true tweets that fans and celebrities posted about the Dunkin’ Donuts rebranding.
Dunkin’ Donuts is officially dropping the ‘Donuts.’ Still no word where they’re dropping the donuts. But I’d like to offer a safe haven. #LSSC pic.twitter.com/9hpxnsbQRS

ME: What do you sell here?
CASHIER: *Stares forlornly into the distance* There’s no way to know.
Dunkin’ Donuts shortening its name will have us all glazed and confused. 🍩

CASHIER: Okay.
So, it sounds like their normal crowd won’t stay away from the company they love — even though their emphasis is no longer on just donuts. It makes sense, as Dunkin’ Donuts has been pretty vocal about their breakfast sandwiches, coffee selection, and fun snacks throughout the past few years.
Much like telling kids today that we used to have to pay to use a public telephone, we’ll someday explain that Dunkin’ used to be the go-to place for dessert. My, how things change.
