Every time I enter a Target my intention is to grab one or two items and exit still in possession of my dignity and electric bill money. Well, that never happens and I’m usually leaving Target with a threshold notification from my bank account. On the entire drive home I’ll debate if I should return something the next day. But, ever since Target launched California Roots, their new $5 wine line, I find my outrageous Target spending habit justifiable. That’s right, Target has $5 wine and it’s worth it.
I know what you’re thinking, $5 wine from anywhere sounds like a hangover. But, hold up. This $5 wine should sound like a deal to you. “We’re out to give our guests even more reasons to love Target—including exclusive products they can’t find anywhere else, and we think they’re going to love California Roots—these wines are just the right blend of incredible quality and amazing value that guests can expect at Target.” says Jeff Burt, the senior vice president of Target’s food and beverage on. He’s right, the quality is there. There are currently five varietals, which are: Chardonnay, Moscato, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon and a Red Blend. I’ve tried all 5 of them and here’s how I rank them.
1.) Chardonnay

The Chardonnay is holding down the number one spot with my taste buds. This may be biased because I do favor white wines over red wines. However, the full body of this Chardonnay and perfect balance of tropical fruit to sweetness is perfect. Last night this wine seized my I’m- still- broke overthinking and swept me away to a happy place.
2.) Pino Grigio

Next up…. The Pinot Grigio. This wine is pleasingly smooth and easy to drink. It’s like biting into a melon. Be careful because this bottle went fast amongst my friends and I.
3.) Red Blend

The Red Blend has a kick to it, and I love it. There is dark cherry flavors and hints of spice in every sip. Red Blend has the highest alcohol content too.
4.) Moscato

The delightfully sweet award goes to the Moscato. It’s a perfect post dinner choice to please that sugar and tipsy crave. This Moscato is robust with orange and nectarine flavors as well.
5.) Cabernet Sauvignon

I’m ranking Cabernet Sauvignon last, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like it. I prefer buttery and sweet notes in wine. However, if I’m eating steak, or any red meat, for dinner I would definitely pair it with this mellow cherry flavored Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a very tasty wine.
If you’re a wine connoisseur, these $5 wines may not be your wine of choice. Once you try them, you’ll have to agree that they are worth every penny of the price. These wines make great dinner party and holiday gifts as well. Cheers to finally finding a great tasting cheap wine.
