It’s that time of year once again, when the Unicode Consortium — the decision-makers behind all things emoji — announced the new emojis that are coming to your devices this year. It’s always exciting to text your friends with new emojis and play around with what’s new, so not long after this announcement, Apple released the designs of 70 new emojis that will be available with the new iOS 12.1 update.
But one of these emojis is getting more attention than the others. The bagel emoji.
Some people — New Yorkers and bagel lovers specifically — have some concerns about this one. They argue that it’s too smooth, too skinny, and that’s it’s an unrealistic bagel, overall, especially since it doesn’t even have cream cheese on it. Grub Street wrote, “Take a look at this clearly machine-cut monstrosity with its stiff and bready interior, which couldn’t possibly be redeemed by a few minutes in a toaster.”

This bagel emoji has caused so much controversy amongst New Yorkers that one local news outlet decided to post a Facebook poll about it, and people on social media definitely had something to say. Aside from this bagel, the latest additions to your keyboard will be new characters with red hair, gray hair, and curly hair. There will even be an emoji for bald people.
For those who are really disappointed, here’s to hoping that they’ll get it right next time. Until then, we’ll try to find other ways to get our bagel fix.
If you have an idea for an emoji (or want a more realistic bagel emoji), you can always submit a proposal to the Unicode Consortium here. Good luck!
