While it seems like the royal family is starting to break away from certain traditions they once held dear, there’s one that Queen Elizabeth is expecting out of Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex. And weirdly enough, it has to do with food.

Markle has been open about her food preferences, from giving her fans the easy instructions for a “sexy” pasta sauce to revealing that she can never say no to a solid glass of red wine. So hopefully, she takes this one food ban seriously.

According to Food & Wine, Queen Elizabeth has made it quite clear that Markle is not allowed to eat garlic while traveling. The popular flavoring is great for health, but is also linked to bad breath. In fact, the Queen’s personal distaste for both garlic and onions is pretty well-known. The chef for the royal family, Darren McGrady, once openly stated to RecipesPlus: “We can never serve anything with garlic or too many onions…the Queen would never have garlic on the menu.”

Now for the good news — while the Queen likely avoids it for herself, she’s not openly stating that Markle can no longer eat garlic. It’s just on the road, when Markle may not have open access to a toothbrush and some toothpaste.

McGrady said there was one other food they were careful to prep for the Queen, and that was steak. He stated that she didn’t like her meat rare. “She liked her meat more well done,” he added.

It’s important to know that while Markle can technically eat whatever she wants — this ban seems to be more out of respect than control. Markle now represents the family, so it’d be a shame if one bad experience with garlic or onions made others think twice about dining with her in the future.

If you’re a fan of garlic and can’t imagine how Meghan Markle is going to live, then we have the recipe for you. It’s our Meatball Stuffed Cheesy Garlic Bread:

It’s perfect for indulging after a bad day.
