Even though Thanksgiving is over, it’s never too late to learn more about prepping a turkey. But if you choose to educate yourself through a YouTube tutorial, you may get more than a boost in your culinary education. You might actually end up tricking your brain a little, too.
A Reddit user named u/Dently was the first to spot this optical illusion, which is pretty incredible, as the video was initially released in 2015. Called Kamado Joe 2015 Smoked Turkey, the video, which is almost 15 minutes long, teaches users how to prep a turkey following the recipe from Paul Sidoriak’s cookbook, titled Exclusively Kamado. Sidoriak’s method uses brine, which is also a key part of the optical illusion.
The video is loaded with comments from previous years, with most people praising Kamado Joe for sharing. But just in the last week, the upload has received comments such as, “What is wrong with your chicken, why is it moving?” and “Zombie chicken.” Others point out that it’s actually a turkey, with some admitting they can’t totally see the illusion.
Curious? Here’s how to see it. Start watching the video at around 2:03, and just stare right into the center of the pot of brine. The payoff is worth it.

The illusion takes place right as the scene changes up. Since your eyes have been focused on the brine, it looks like the turkey — which is legitimately just sitting there — is moving.
If you stared at the brine long enough, it might actually take you some time to refocus your eyes. The brine is just that mesmerizing.
Perhaps watching this video can be a brand new annual Thanksgiving tradition. (And if you also follow the recipe, you might change the whole way you cook your bird!)
