It looks like some of the baristas over at Starbucks also think that Barb deserved a better ending. Rumor has it that there’s a creative hack you can use while you order your drink, and Stranger Things fans everywhere should give it a shot. Actually, everyone should give it a shot.
By now, you’ve probably heard of Stranger Things. The show was an instant hit on Netflix, and new seasons can’t come out fast enough. While the series takes place in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, a few unlucky characters had to navigate through the very scary “upside down,” an alternate dimension with some very scary predators. It was a place you didn’t want to end up, but visually, it was kind of impressive.
Starbucks doesn’t have an alternative dimension, but some baristas are familiar with the show. Supposedly if you ask for your blended drink “upside down,” they’ll make sure it’s mixed extremely well.
According to Business Insider, the phrase actually originated thanks to one of their most popular menu items — the Iced Caramel Macchiato.
Unmodified, the drink — while still delicious — has some streaks where the ingredients meet up. The difference between an “upside down” and a regular is not just that the ingredients are mixed, but even the order of the ingredients often changes up to really enhance the flavor.
Some baristas even choose to reverse the order of how they add each item.
It’s a nice little twist that your barista — hopefully — won’t mind creating.
While Hawkins, Indiana might not have had a Starbucks (the now-booming business was just over ten years old at that point) this is probably how the Stranger Things kids will someday order their favorite drinks.
