Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add vanilla and egg and mix. Add flour and baking powder and mix until combined.
  3. Separate a third of the dough. Roll out to ¼ inch thick and cut into a square.
  4. Divide remaining dough into fifths. Color dough green, purple, yellow, and orange, leaving one fifth of the dough plain.
  5. To make candy corn cookies: roll out plain, yellow and orange dough to ½ inch thick. Stack the orange and white dough on top of the yellow. Pass rolling pin over the dough to combine. Slice stacked dough into ¼ inch slices and cut each slice into triangles.
  6. To make spooky swirl cookies: Roll green and purple dough as thinly as possible. Stack the dough and roll tightly. Chill dough until firm. Cut dough into slices.
  7. Place all cookies onto a lined baking sheet and bake for 7-9 minutes. Cookies should not begin to brown and will firm up as they cool.
  8. To prepare royal icing: combine powdered sugar, meringue powder, and warm water and mix until smooth and combined. Divide into thirds, coloring two of the thirds orange and black. Add additional water as needed for desired consistency. Place each color in piping bags.
  9. To decorate board: once square cookie has cooled, Flood cookie with black icing. Cut a small opening at the tip of the white icing’s piping bag and pipe swirls around the black icing. Make sure to act fast so that the icing stays wet. Use a toothpick to drag the icing outwards from the center of each spiral to create a spiderweb effect. Allow icing to dry completely.
  10. Once icing has dried, pipe a tic tac toe grid on top of the spiderweb design with the orange icing. Allow to dry.
  11. Once all royal icing has dried completely, serve board cookie alongside candy corn and swirl cookies. Play a game of tic tac toe, using mini cookies as game pieces, and then enjoy a sweet treat!

What Is pork broth?

Borsch—a sour and hearty soup that’s loved especially throughout Eastern Europe—is the national dish of Ukraine and a staple in nearly every household. There are four main categories of borsch in Ukraine: red, green, white, and cold (kholodnyk). Borsch is eaten at weddings and funerals, can be served hot or cold, and can be as thick as a stew or thin as a consommé. It can also be almost any color, and the correct hue of borsch is often a hotly contested topic.
